An alert says web protection is off. I didn’t turn it off. What happened and how do I turn it back on.

On mobile devices, web protection in Microsoft Defender can turn off even if it was not manually disabled. Battery-saving features in the operating system can stop apps that run in the background and remove the accessibility permission Defender needs. When that permission is removed, web protection is turned off and an alert appears.

To turn it back on and keep it on, adjust both device and Defender settings:

    1. Change device battery settings (names may vary by device and OS version):
      • Turn off battery optimization/adaptive battery for Microsoft Defender, or add Microsoft Defender to the list of apps excluded from battery optimization.
      • Allow background activity for Microsoft Defender in the app info or Battery section of device settings.
      • Ensure app activity is allowed even when Microsoft Defender is not actively in use.
    2. Re-enable web protection in Microsoft Defender:
      • Open the Microsoft Defender app.
      • Tap the Device protection card or the alert card for web protection.
      • Follow the on-screen steps to turn web protection back on.

After these changes, web protection should remain enabled and not turn off automatically.
