How to cut either audio OR video on ClipChamp?

I'm editing a short video on ClipChamp. I have a specific piece of music which I need the video to fit to.

The videos come in multiple shots, and I'm likely to be taking a couple of seconds from each, that match the separate audio file.

I have already detached the original audio files (so the videos are essentially mute), and have the music underneath the video.

However, when I cut the video, the music file gets cut too. This risks me either accidentally deleting something, or moving snippets of music around by mistake.

How do I cut JUST the video, and leave the music whole?

In Clipchamp, splitting only the video (and not the music) depends on what is selected when performing the split.

To cut just the video and keep the music whole:

  1. Make sure only the video clip is selected on the timeline (click the video so it is highlighted, and ensure the audio/music track is not highlighted).
  2. Move the seeker to the point where the video needs to be cut.
  3. Click the split button (scissors icon) on the timeline or press S on the keyboard.
  4. The highlighted video will split into two assets, while the unselected music track remains uncut.

Avoid holding Shift or selecting both tracks together, because:

  • When both video and audio assets are selected and the split button is used, Clipchamp will split them at the same time.

If video and music are still attached somehow, detach or deselect the music, then repeat the steps above so only the video is affected by the split.
