My Microsoft Office somehow cannot reactivate after I send my laptop to a service center

I just bought a new laptop but for some reason the system couldn't detect the GPU so I had to send it to the service center. Before sending it to them, I already activate the pre-installed Microsoft Office and it worked just fine. After the service was done, I tried to log back in into the Microsoft office using the same Miscrosoft account but for some reason it says that the version was already installed on another device. I do have another device (my old laptop) signed in with the same account but surely the Microsoft office in my old laptop wouldn't share the same product key as the one in my new laptop, right?

I just don't understand why it wouldn't work now when I could use it just fine before I send it to the service center.

Hi, I'm John! I will help you with this.

The service center likely reset Windows or replaced hardware during the GPU repair. Because of that, Microsoft may now see the laptop as a different device, which can trigger this activation message.

Also, please check this page: https://account.microsoft.com/services

See if the Office license appears there. If it does, first uninstall all Office apps from Control Panel > Programs and Features, restart the laptop, then click “Install” from that page instead of activating from the Office app directly.

If the license says it is already in use, you may need to remove the old activation/device first or contact Microsoft Support to transfer/reactivate the license, especially if hardware was replaced during repair.

Office Home & Student/Home & Business/Professional is a one-time purchase that can only be activated on a single computer. After the service center work, Windows and hardware may be seen as a different device, so the existing license is still tied to the “old” device and activation on the “new” one is blocked.

To use the same license on the repaired laptop, the license must be transferred according to the Software License Terms and activated again, typically by phone activation:

    1. Confirm the product is associated with the correct Microsoft account
      • Go to Subscriptions and sign in with the same Microsoft account used when Office was first activated.
      • Verify that the Office Home 2024 (or the exact edition shown in the error) appears under that account.
    2. Transfer and reactivate Office on the repaired laptop
      • Install Office on the repaired laptop if it is not already installed.
      • Start an Office app (for example, Word). When prompted that the product is already installed on another device, choose the option to contact support/activate by phone or transfer the license.
      • Follow the telephone activation steps to activate Office on this device.
      • After successful activation, uninstall Office from any other device where this one-time license is no longer intended to be used.
    3. Review the transfer terms
      • In any Office app: File > Account > About (for example, About Word) > View the Microsoft Software License Terms.
      • For one-time purchases such as Office 2019/2016, transfer terms are in section “3. Transfer to a Third Party.” Similar terms apply to newer perpetual versions: the license can be moved, but only to one computer at a time and requires reactivation.

If activation or transfer still fails after these steps, use the “Contact support to transfer your license to this device” link in the dialog shown in the screenshot to have Microsoft Support complete the transfer.
