Managing presence indicators such as Available, Busy, or Away to reflect user availability
Microsoft Teams does not support adding new, fully custom presence states (such as “Call wrap up,” “Break,” or “Lunch”). Presence is limited to the built‑in statuses like Available, Busy, Do not disturb, Be right back, Appear away, and Appear offline, plus automatic states such as In a meeting or In a call.
What can be customized today:
- Set one of the built‑in statuses manually
- On desktop/web: select the profile picture in the top-right, then select the current status and choose from the list (Available, Busy, Do not disturb, Be right back, Appear away, Appear offline).
- On mobile: tap Menu, then tap the status to change it.
- Use status duration
For scenarios like “Lunch” or “Break,” choose a closest matching built‑in status (for example, Be right back or Away) and set a duration so it automatically resets later:- Desktop: profile picture > current status > Duration > pick a status and a time under Reset status after, then Done.
- Use a custom status message
While presence states themselves are fixed, a custom status message can describe the specific situation (for example, “On lunch until 1 PM” or “After-call work / wrap up”). This message shows alongside the standard presence.
There is no information in the provided material about future plans to add user-defined presence states.
