Personal Vault.lnk Not Allowed File Type in OneDrive

I have the latest Windows 11 Pro update as of 5/14/2026. I subscribe to Microsoft Office 365 Family. I get the following error message when syncing OneDrive on the aforementioned configuration:

Personal Vault.lnk
This item name or type isn't allowed.
Please rename the item or remove it from your OneDrive.

I attempted a CoPilot suggestion to set "hide" the file under the file properties and then turn off "Show Hidden items" in File Explorer. The error remained. I quit (stopped) and restarted OneDrive, still the error remains. I rebooted Windows 11 Pro and the OneDrive error remains.

Is there a fix to this error?

Thank you.

The error occurs because OneDrive does not allow certain item names or types to sync. In this case, the shortcut file Personal Vault.lnk is treated as an unsupported item type/name and will continue to generate a sync error as long as it remains in a OneDrive-synced location.

The only supported fix from the available information is to remove or rename items that OneDrive considers invalid:

  1. In File Explorer, locate Personal Vault.lnk in the OneDrive folder that is being synced.
  2. Either:
    • Delete Personal Vault.lnk from the OneDrive folder, or
    • Move it out of any OneDrive-synced folder to a local-only folder (for example, somewhere under C:\Users\<user>\ that is not part of OneDrive sync).
  3. If desired, create a new shortcut to Personal Vault in a location that is not synced by OneDrive.
  4. After removing or moving the file, let OneDrive rescan; the sync error should clear once the unsupported item is no longer in the synced scope.

Hiding the file or restarting OneDrive/Windows does not resolve this, because OneDrive still detects the unsupported item name/type. The item must be removed from the synced content or renamed so it no longer matches an unsupported pattern.

For other sync issues caused by unsupported names or characters, the general guidance is to rename or remove items that contain invalid characters or disallowed patterns.
