Multiple Microsoft Accounts (creating multiple problems)

Man…I sure hope Microsoft Support monitors this forum...

But...I have multiple Microsoft Accounts...I believe one FREE...one for Microsoft 365 (for my PC's Microsoft software in general)...& one for OneDrive cloud storage, for backing up my computer files. The problem is...there were sign-on issues w/ at least two of these accounts in the past...which required changing passwords & such...& now (w/ a recent loss of a file on my PC where I had all the differing sign-on info)...I really don't know which is which.

Then today, I received one of those Microsoft dialogs (when attempting to open an older MS Word document) telling me my billing info needs to be updated (which may be true, as I recently had to change out my main Debit Card due to being compromised). That's all straightened out now...but I really need someone (w/ a big brain) from Microsoft to contact me, so as to get this all sorted out.

[AND...on top of all this mess...I'm still running Windows 10...I was afraid of going to Windows 11 before resolving this issue, for fear of losing all my file/folder access for my whole PC...if after going over to Version 11, I couldn't log on to my PC because the sign-on/multiple account hadn't been resolved first]

Please folks...I really need help here (& there's also a side issue...I use Windows Live Mail as my e-mail utility...& I'm starting to get those dialogs that state Live Mail can't connect (even tho it currently still does).

If a Microsoft Tech could call me, so as to get this all worked out…we could then identify all current, in place accounts…fix everything associated w/ that issue; & then I could move onto Windows 11 without having to worry about losing everything.

Thanx very much… Mark Forman (mark4man) (609) 276-2090

Multiple Microsoft accounts and mixed billing/sign-in details can be untangled, but it requires confirming which account is used where and then updating credentials and payment details on the correct account.

Use these steps to sort it out and then prepare safely for Windows 11:

    1. Identify the correct Microsoft account(s)
      • If the username(s) are forgotten, use the “You forgot your Microsoft account username” flow: You forgot your Microsoft account username.
      • Also review where each account is used with Microsoft 365: Check products or services.
      • If an email address is used for more than one account (for example, a personal Microsoft account and a work/school account), you may see prompts like “Which account do you want to use?” This typically means a personal account was created with a work or school email. See Which OneDrive account to use for guidance.
    2. Fix sign-in and password issues
    3. Clarify which account owns Microsoft 365 and OneDrive
      • For Microsoft 365 for home, the article I forgot the account I use with Microsoft 365 walks through:
        • Confirming the account used for Microsoft 365.
        • Checking which products or services are tied to which account.
      • This helps determine which account is the subscription account (Office/OneDrive) versus any free or unused accounts.
    4. Update billing information on the correct account
    5. Understand account separation and merging
      • Personal Microsoft accounts and Microsoft 365 work or school accounts cannot be merged, but they can be used side by side. See Can I merge my personal and work Microsoft accounts?.
      • The “Combining Microsoft accounts” article also clarifies what can and cannot be combined and points to other support options.
    6. When direct support from a person is needed
      • For complex account/billing issues or when self-service options are not enough, contact Microsoft support by phone. The “Customer service phone numbers” page provides the official contact numbers for the appropriate region.
      • If there are sign-in issues that block access to admin or subscription settings, support can escalate to specialized teams (such as data protection) to verify identity and restore access, as described in the Q&A examples.
    7. Preparing for Windows 11
      • Before upgrading:
        • Ensure the primary Microsoft account used on the PC is known and working.
        • Confirm OneDrive is signed in and fully synced so files are backed up.
      • Once accounts and billing are stable, upgrading from Windows 10 to Windows 11 should not cause loss of files or access, provided sign-in details are correct and backups exist.

For Windows Live Mail connectivity issues, the key is to ensure the account credentials are correct and consistent with the Microsoft account being used, and that any password changes are also updated in the mail client.
