Hi, I'm John! I will help you with this.

To help narrow down the issue:

    1. By "locked," do you mean Word is asking you to buy or activate Microsoft 365 before you can type? That usually happens when Microsoft 365 is installed but not activated yet.
    2. Please check if you have an active license or subscription linked to your Microsoft account here: https://account.microsoft.com/services Do you see Microsoft 365 listed there? Also, was this working before or is this a new setup on the computer?
    3. Also are you using Windows PC or Mac, mobile (iOS or Android)?

Word is likely locked because Office 365 is not fully activated or the file is opening read-only.

    Try these steps in order:

    1. Check activation status
      • Open Word.
      • If an Unlicensed Product or activation error message appears, activation is required before editing will work.
      • Follow the activation prompts, or see Unlicensed Product and activation errors in Office from the article below.
    2. Make sure OneDrive is not full (if the document is stored in OneDrive)
      • Select the OneDrive icon in the notification area and choose Manage storage, or go to onedrive.live.com, sign in, and check used space.
      • If storage is full, free up space, then reopen the document.
    3. Restart and repair Office if Word still won’t let typing
      • Close all Office apps.
      • Restart the computer.
      • If still locked, run an Online Repair of Office:
        • Open Settings > Apps.
        • Find Microsoft Office.
        • Select Modify > Online Repair and complete the repair.
    4. If a specific document is locked
      • If the message says the file is locked by another user or already in use, close Word, restart the computer, and reopen the file.
      • If the file is on a shared location and someone else has it open in the desktop app, wait for them to close it, or use File > Save As to save your own copy and edit that copy.

If none of these steps work and Word still cannot be used, completely uninstall Office, restart the PC, then reinstall Office from the Microsoft account services page and activate again.
