    Hi @D G

Based on the information available, other users have shared that Office for Mac version 16.77 is the latest version that supports macOS Big Sur

You can download the Office suite directly using the link below: https://officecdn.microsoft.com/pr/C1297A47-86C4-4C1F-97FA-950631F94777/MacAutoupdate/Microsoft_365…

If you are unable to upgrade your MacOS version, the last version of Office that will work on MacOS Big Sur is 16.77, that is available on the long table on this link to all the downloadable versions from the Microsoft servers.

Big Sur 11.7.11 is older than the currently supported macOS versions for receiving new Microsoft 365 for Mac updates. Microsoft 365 for Mac, Office 2024 for Mac, and Office 2021 for Mac only support the three most recent major versions of macOS, and as of September 2025 those are macOS Tahoe (26), Sequoia (15), and Sonoma (14). Starting with the September 2025 update (16.101), macOS Sonoma or later is required to receive updates to Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, and OneNote.

On a Mac that cannot be upgraded beyond Big Sur, the path is:

    1. Install an older Office for Mac build that still supports Big Sur.
    2. Use the Microsoft 365 subscription only to activate that older build.

Moderator guidance for similar cases (Monterey 12.7.6) indicates that:

    • The last supported Office for Mac build for that OS was 16.88/16.88.1.
    • The correct build must be downloaded from the Office for Mac update history page and then activated with the Microsoft 365 subscription.

For Big Sur, the exact last supported build is not listed in the provided context, but the same pattern applies: install the most recent Office for Mac build that still supports Big Sur from the Office for Mac update history, then sign in with the Microsoft 365 account to activate. Newer builds that require Sonoma or later will not install.

If Big Sur cannot be upgraded to at least Sonoma, there is no way to install the latest Microsoft 365 for Mac builds; only the last Big Sur–compatible Office for Mac version can be used, and it will no longer receive security or feature updates.
