Microsoft verification has stopped working on all my MacBooks. So I am locked out of my MacBook for. Verification

My microsoft emails are always asking for the password again and when I switched on a MacBook I had not used for 3 weeks after it accepted the password for my Go Daddy Email account using 365 and exchange it sent me a code for verification. When I enter the code and free the continue button it does nothing. If I press it again it say incorrect code. I have spent just under 2 hours on th phone to go daddy support and they suggested using outlook. I have office installed when I try to add My go Daddy account we get the same verification entry box which does nothing. I looked to see if could add on browser version but apparently the browser is a stripped down product. It all works fine on my iPhones but none of my MacBooks. Does anyone have any knowledge or a workaround or any idea when Microsoft will fix the fault?

Based on the described behavior (verification code screen appears on Mac, code is sent and accepted on iPhone, but the Continue button on Mac does nothing or then reports “incorrect code”), the issue is most likely with how the Microsoft verification page is loading or how the session/cookies are handled on macOS, not with the GoDaddy mailbox itself.

Try these steps in order:

  1. Test verification in a private browser session
    1. On the Mac, open Safari or another browser.
    2. Open a Private/Incognito window.
    3. Go to the Microsoft Security basics page and sign in: https://account.microsoft.com/security
    4. When prompted for verification, choose the same method (SMS/email code) and enter the code.
    5. If this works in a private browser, the problem is likely due to cached sign-in data or blocked cookies in the normal browser session or in the embedded sign-in window that Outlook/Office uses.
  2. Clear cached sign-in state for Microsoft in the browser
    1. In the main (non‑private) browser, clear cookies/site data specifically for Microsoft/Outlook/Office domains.
    2. Close and reopen the browser and try the sign‑in again.
  3. Reset the account sign‑in inside Outlook for Mac
    • In Outlook for Mac (Classic):
      1. Go to Outlook > Tools > Accounts.
      2. Select the GoDaddy/Microsoft 365 account.
      3. Use Reset Account (or remove and re‑add the account if Reset is not available).
    • In New Outlook for Mac:
      1. Go to Outlook Settings > Accounts.
      2. Remove the affected account.
      3. Quit Outlook, reopen it, and add the account again.
When adding the account, a Microsoft sign‑in window will appear. Enter the password, then the verification code. If the embedded window still fails, choose the option to sign in via browser if offered, or add the account via the browser first (step 1) and then back in Outlook.
  4. If verification codes are not accepted anywhere If the code is not accepted even in a private browser session:
    1. Go to the Security basics page: https://account.microsoft.com/security
    2. Select Update info.
    3. Choose a method that is working (for example, an alternate email) or select I don't have any of these to replace the security info.
    4. Complete the prompts to update or replace the verification method.
If no verification method works at all, follow the guidance under I'm not getting my Microsoft account verification code and, if necessary, use the account recovery form referenced there.
  5. If blocked or rate‑limited If many verification attempts have been made, the account can be temporarily blocked or rate‑limited:
    1. Stop trying repeatedly for at least 24 hours.
    2. After waiting, try again from a different network (for example, mobile hotspot instead of home Wi‑Fi) and from a private browser window.
    3. If a message such as Try another verification method appears, follow the guidance to switch to another method or network and avoid repeated attempts that can extend the block.
  6. If nothing works and account is locked If verification and recovery keep failing and the account is locked, complete the Microsoft account recovery form as documented in the referenced articles, and wait for the lockout period to expire before trying again. Support and forum moderators cannot directly bypass these automated protections.

These steps address the common causes described in the Microsoft verification troubleshooting guidance: stuck or corrupted sign‑in sessions on a device, blocked or rate‑limited verification, and the need to update or replace security info when codes are not working.

    Hi @Rich James

Thank you for reaching out and for sharing the details of your issue.

You could refer to the AI’s suggestions first and let me know whether they help resolve or work around the issue. Based on your description, this behavior is likely related to an issue with the embedded web authentication window (WebView) used by Outlook or Mail on macOS, rather than an issue with your account itself. The fact that everything works correctly on iPhone supports this, as iOS uses a different authentication mechanism.

As an initial step, please try signing in via Outlook on the web using Safari or a private/incognito browser window. Additionally, clear the browser cache and cookies, then sign in again to check whether the issue persists.

To better assist you, could you please provide the following information:

May I know your current macOS and Outlook application version?

Since this is a business account, could you please verify whether this issue occurs for other users when accessing it on macOS, or only with this device?

Please understand that our initial reply may not always immediately resolve the issue. However, with your help and more detailed information, we can work together to find a solution.

Worked fine. Used Chrome and then added authenticator as option but when I tried to use in Apple Mail the authenticator did not come up but is accepted the code, so delighted.
