If Microsoft Authenticator gives a code, and the computer provides a code there is no place to enter a code. No instructions, but blocked for 24 hours.....

Trying to use my Microsoft authenticator as required to share my family plan with a relative, a number showed up on my computer which said "plug this number into your MS authenticator!" As if it is a given. The instructions may suggest download the MS authenticator....anyway, I have the MS authenticator but another company is listed, not MS. So there was no place to enter the code. I used enter another way...the only way that culminated in progress was email, and just when it was about to be a success, a notification stated "you tried to many times, you are now blocked." A waste of 20 minutes. Thorough instructions to first let people know there are limited opportunities, with instruction on setting up the MS authenticator, without the assumption one has downloaded it from Google Play, would be great. Offering suggestions for common issues, such as a code on the PC, a code on the authenticator, but no place to enter the code....what to do? Thanks

When a number appears on the PC saying to “plug this number into your Microsoft Authenticator,” it is usually asking to approve the sign-in in the Authenticator app, not to type that number back into the PC.

From the available information, the main issues and actions are:

    1. No place to enter a code in Authenticator
      • Microsoft Authenticator is a mobile app that shows verification prompts and one-time codes for each account.
      • If only another company/account appears in the app and there is no Microsoft account entry, then the Microsoft account was never added to Authenticator.
      • In that case, the app cannot display a code or prompt for that Microsoft account, so the PC’s “enter this number in your Authenticator” step cannot complete.
    2. “Authentication did not complete” / blocked after too many attempts
      • If the app is locked, notifications are disabled, the app is out of date, or the device has network/time issues, authentication can fail and eventually trigger a temporary block.
      • Blocks can also occur after many repeated attempts or unusual activity; the service may then show messages like “Try another verification method” or temporarily block sign-in.
    3. What to do next time
      • Ensure Microsoft Authenticator is installed on the phone from the official store (Apple App Store or Google Play) and updated to the latest version.
      • Add the Microsoft account to the app first, following the “Add your accounts to Microsoft Authenticator” guidance. Once the account is present, the app will show either:
        • A push notification asking to approve the sign-in and match a number, or
        • A “One-time password code” that can be used where requested.
      • If a block occurs (for example, after many failed attempts):
        • Use another verification method already on the account (SMS, alternate email) if available.
        • Avoid repeated attempts; wait at least 24 hours before trying again, as repeated retries can extend the block.
        • Try another network (switch between Wi‑Fi and mobile data) if network issues are suspected.

If the Authenticator app still does not show any Microsoft account or one-time password code, and no alternate verification method works, recovery may require working through Microsoft’s sign-in helper or support paths referenced in the documentation.
