I think u can’t swap the phone while MFA is stuck, so tap “i don’t have any of these” → finish recovery → MFA resets → add new num…if that still fails, use the account‑recovery form to reissue MFA.

To change the phone number when Microsoft Authenticator or codes go to the wrong number, the security info must be updated or replaced using the “I don’t have any of these” path and the account recovery process.

Follow these steps depending on the type of account:

    1. When prompted for a verification code (work/school or Microsoft account):
      1. On the verification screen, choose I don’t have a code (if shown) and then I don’t have any of these.
      2. Follow the prompts to replace the existing phone number and other security info.
      3. Add a new, correct mobile phone number as security info. VOIP numbers cannot be used; a mobile number is required.
    2. If verification codes are not arriving at all:
      1. Avoid making excessive or repetitive code requests; this can cause a temporary block where codes are not sent.
      2. Check whether the phone blocks texts from unknown numbers; if so, change phone settings and then choose I don’t have a code to resend.
      3. Ensure the SMS inbox is not full and that the messaging app is working properly.
      4. If using email as an alternative method, check the junk folder for messages from @accountprotection.microsoft.com and mark it as a trusted sender.
    3. For a work or school account where the phone/email security info is wrong:
      1. Sign in to the Security info page with a method that still works, if any.
      2. Select Update info.
      3. Choose a method that works, or select I don’t have any of these to replace the security info and add the correct phone number.
    4. If none of the existing methods work and access is completely blocked:
      1. Use the account recovery process (for Microsoft accounts, the recovery form linked from the verification and sign-in flows).
      2. Provide as much accurate information as possible so ownership can be verified.
      3. Once access is restored, go to the security info page and remove the old phone number, then add the new one.

During this process, avoid changing all security info at once; doing so can cause the account to be restricted for 30 days.
