I can't access my email account

Hi, I have lost access to my email account as from Monday this week it keeps wanting to send me a code to a recovery email that I have no password for along with a phone number no longer in use. I have set up a new recovery email and phone number which have been accepted by Microsoft but when I try to re gain access to my primary email account the pop up keeps referring to my old recovery email and not the new one. I have tried phoning Microsoft but they just refer me back to there website for which I can't find the answers I need so any ideas would be much appreciated.

Many Thanks, Paul.

    Hi Paul Baker,

Thank you for reaching out, and I’m very sorry to hear about the difficulties you’ve been experiencing. I completely understand how frustrating this situation can be.

Based on what you’ve described, this behavior is typically caused by Microsoft’s security information update protection. When recovery details such as your backup email or phone number are changed or replaced, the account enters a 30‑day waiting period before the new information becomes fully active.

During this period, it is expected that:

    • The system will continue to send verification codes to the previous (old) recovery methods
    • Your newly added email and phone number, although accepted, will not yet be used for sign-in verification

This delay is intentional and designed to protect your account in case the changes were made by someone without your permission

In the meantime, here are a few things you can try:

    • If you still have access to any of the old recovery methods, you may try signing in and cancel the pending security change request from your account’s security page
    • If any alternative verification method is still available (for example, another email or device already signed in), try selecting “other ways to verify” during sign-in
    • If you no longer have access to the old recovery details, the best approach is to allow the 30‑day waiting period to complete, after which the new security information should be used automatically
    • It’s also recommended to avoid repeated recovery attempts, as this can sometimes restart or delay the process further.

Unfortunately, this waiting period cannot be shortened or bypassed, even by Microsoft support, as it is a built‑in safeguard for account security.

I hope this helps clarify what’s happening. Please don’t hesitate to reach out again if you have any other questions or need further assistance.
