password keeps having a problem

Hi there,

Since i opted in to save my password onto my apple mac, I started noticing that if i choose to type in my password as a log in method (not using a saved passkey to sign in automatically ), it keeps on saying incorrect password ( i know it is correct because it is exactly the same as the one saved on the passkey of the computer).

I tried to use an other phone to log in using password option, (I know my pasword is CORRECT), but it still says incorrect password.

Can anyone advise what happen?

Kind regards

    Hi kanny wai han kwong

I understand you’re having trouble signing in using your password: passkey sign‑in works on your Mac, but choosing the password method shows “incorrect password” even when you enter the password you believe is correct (and you’re seeing the same behavior on another device). When you try password sign-in, is the message exactly “Incorrect password”, or is it “You have tried too many times with an incorrect password”?

I would love to hear from you. Have a nice day!

The behavior described typically means the account password on Microsoft’s side is not what is being typed, even if the passkey/biometric sign‑in still works.

    Key points from Microsoft guidance:

    1. A Microsoft account always has a password, even if sign‑in is done with a passkey/biometrics on Mac. Some sensitive actions or sign‑in flows require that actual password and will not accept a passkey instead.
    2. If the password is not accepted on multiple devices, the effective password for the account is different from what is being entered, even if the passkey sign‑in continues to work.

    To fix this:

    1. Reset or set a new password for the Microsoft account
      • Go to the Microsoft account security page: use the Recover your account or password reset flow described here:
        • Select Recover your account and enter the email/phone/Skype name used to sign in.
        • Choose where to receive the security code, then enter the code.
        • Set a New password and confirm it.
      • Alternatively, from the signed‑in session on a trusted device, go to the account’s Advanced security area and choose Change password or Create password, then set a new password.
    2. Use the new password everywhere
      • When prompted for a password on Mac, iPhone, or other devices, enter the newly created password (not the passkey).
      • If desired, continue using the passkey/Touch ID for daily sign‑in; the password can be kept mainly for verification and recovery.
    3. If sign‑in is still blocked on a specific device
      • If messages like “tried to sign in too many times” appear, reset the password again from that device’s browser using the standard recovery flow, then try signing in with the new password.
      • If the problem persists only on one device after a successful password reset, try a different browser or app on that device, or contact Microsoft support using the account recovery/support options.

This approach aligns with Microsoft’s documented requirement that certain account changes and some sign‑in paths must use the actual password, even when passkeys or biometrics are enabled.
