I’m working on coursework and I had done 3 of the questions, but my answer for the third question did not auto save. I still have 1 and 2, but the work for question 3 took me ages, I would love to recover it!!

    Dear @PG,

I’m really sorry this happened. From what you described, I understand that you were working on a Word document on your iPad for coursework. You completed questions 1 and 2, but the text you wrote for question 3 is now missing because it did not auto save.

To better assistance, could you please confirm following information:

    • Where was the document saved? OneDrive, SharePoint, iCloud Drive, or On My iPad (local storage)?
    • Were you signed into Word with your school account while editing?
    • Were you connected to the internet while writing question 3? Any low battery, app crash, or forced close around that time?
    • I also would like to confirm that while editing, did you see the AutoSave switch showing as ON in Word, or did you expect it to be on but it didn’t seem to save?

In the meantime, I recommend some quick check below:

1/ If AutoSave was ON, please check the file on OneDrive using a web browser

Sign in to OneDrive in a browser using the same account you used in Word > Locate the document and open it to see if question 3 appears there > Then check Version History for earlier versions that may include your missing text:

    • In OneDrive (web), find the file, right-click the file and select “Version history".

    User's image

    • Open a version from around the time you wrote question 3.

    User's image

    • If you find the missing content, you can restore that version, download it or copy/paste the missing text into your current document.

2/ Check local storage and iCloud on your iPad

    • Open the Files app and check “On My iPad” and “iCloud Drive”  if there is any another copy of the file.
    • In Word, check Open > Recent to ensure you’re opening the most recent copy (cloud vs local).

Tips: To avoid this happening again, I recommend saving coursework documents directly to OneDrive or SharePoint and confirming AutoSave is on while editing.

Please understand that our initial response does not always resolve the issue immediately. However, with your help and more detailed information, we can work together to find a solution.

Your detailed response will help us diagnose and investigate the issue more efficiently. If I misunderstood what you’re looking for, feel free to let me know or share a screenshot. I’d be happy to help further!

Thank you for your cooperation. I'm looking forward for your reply.

On iPad, recovery options are limited compared to desktop Word, but a few checks are possible.

    1. Confirm where the file is stored
    • If the document is saved in OneDrive or SharePoint and AutoSave was on, earlier versions may exist.
    • If it is only local on the iPad and never synced, there is no version history beyond what is currently in the file.
    1. Check for earlier versions (if stored in OneDrive/SharePoint)
    • Open the document again in Word (on a desktop app or Word for the web if possible).
    • For Word desktop: go to File > Info.
    • Under Manage Documents, look for any versions, especially one labeled “(when I closed without saving)”.
    • Open that version and, if it contains the missing work, select Restore to overwrite the current file, or Compare to copy the missing text back into the current version.
    1. If the file was never saved with the latest work
    • The desktop guidance is: File > Info > Manage Document > Recover Unsaved Documents, then open and Save As.
    • On iPad, there is no equivalent “Recover Unsaved Documents” UI; if the app did not sync or save that work to OneDrive/SharePoint before it was lost, it cannot be recovered.
    1. For future work
    • Ensure the document is stored in OneDrive or SharePoint and that AutoSave is turned on.
    • Periodically use manual save (for example, closing the document to force a sync) so that work is committed to the cloud and appears in version history.

If no older version appears in OneDrive/SharePoint and the current file only shows questions 1 and 2, the work for question 3 is not recoverable from Word.
