    Dear @Andino, Azariah,

Thank you for posting your question in the Microsoft Q&A forum.

Based on your description, you were working on a Word document on your iPad with an education account, swiped away from the app, and the document disappeared. You’re wondering whether you’re able to recover its history.

If you swiped away from the Word app and the document was saved to OneDrive, the file should still be available under Recent in Word or directly in OneDrive, and you can also check Version History if the file exists. However, if the document was never saved before closing the app, Word on iPad does not support recovery of unsaved files or document history. Unlike Word on Windows or macOS, the iPad app does not have an AutoRecover feature for unsaved documents. In this case, the content unfortunately cannot be restored. For future work, make sure AutoSave is enabled and confirm the document is saved to OneDrive while you’re editing.

In the meantime, here are some suggestions you can try to check:

Check Recent files in Word on iPad

Open Microsoft Word on your iPad and look under Recent documents. Files closed accidentally often still appear there if they were saved at least once.

    Check OneDrive

Open the OneDrive app (or go to OneDrive on the web)

Check Recent, Documents, or Assignments folders

If the file exists, open it again in Word

I hope information above meet your expectations. And I truly empathize for your situation, please understand that as forum moderator, my primary goal is to provide helpful guidance and support through general troubleshooting steps. While I don’t have access to internal systems or test devices required to resolve backend issues, I truly appreciate your understanding of these limitations. I genuinely hope the information I share helps guide you in the right direction, and I'm always here to assist as much as I can within my scope.

On an iPad, drafts or unsaved work in Word or other Microsoft 365 apps can sometimes be recovered, but only if the app or service created a backup or AutoRecover copy.

    Try these options:

    1. Reopen Word on the iPad
    • Open Word again and check the Recent list to see if the document appears there.
    1. Check for unsaved or recovered files (from a desktop if available) If the same document was ever opened or edited in Word on a PC or Mac with AutoRecover turned on, it may have a recoverable version:
    • Open Word or Excel on a computer.
    • Open the file (if it exists) or any related file.
    • Go to File > Info.
    • Under Manage Document/Workbook/Presentation, look for a file labeled (when I closed without saving) and select it.
    • Use Restore (or Save As if it’s an unsaved file) to keep that version.

If the file was never saved or synced to OneDrive/SharePoint and no AutoRecover/AutoSave copy exists, there is no way to request or restore a version history from Microsoft.

    1. If the file was stored in OneDrive or SharePoint If the document was saved to OneDrive or SharePoint, you may be able to restore an earlier version from there using a browser on a computer:
    • Open OneDrive or SharePoint in a browser.
    • Locate the document.
    • Use Version History (if available) to restore an earlier version.

If none of these locations show the document or an earlier version, the content is not recoverable.
