Microsoft terminology is sometimes confusing. Specifically, product names are not always consistent.

If you have a subscription (= Microsoft 365), you should be able to install the most recent update, assuming that your version of macOS allows it.

If you have Office 2021, which is a perpetual license, you can install updates for as long as the product is supported.

Note that you can't move from one perpetual license to another one without paying for it. In other words, you can't move from Office 2021 to Office 2024.

If you’re using Office 2021, it’s important to understand that it does not upgrade like a subscription version.

You can update it, but you cannot upgrade it for free.

    What you can do (updates)

    Office 2021 receives:

    • Security updates
    • Bug fixes

You can update it by going to: Word/Excel → File → Account → Update Options → Update Now

    What “upgrade” actually means

If you want a newer version (like Microsoft 365 or Office 2024), you must:

    • Buy a new version or subscription
    • Then install it (it may replace the old version)

Office 2021 is a one-time purchase, so it doesn’t get new features or version upgrades—only fixes and security patches

    Best option

    • If you want latest features → switch to Microsoft 365 (subscription)
    • If you prefer one-time purchase → buy the newer Office versionIf you’re using Office 2021, it’s important to understand that it does not upgrade like a subscription version. You can update it, but you cannot upgrade it for free.

    Hi @Arjun Sharma

I understand from the information you provided that you are using a student email that includes a Microsoft 365 license, but your Office package is currently stuck on the 2021 version. You are wondering how to update it and whether you can do it yourself or if you need to contact your administrator.

To help you resolve this issue as smoothly as possible, I just need a little more detail from you!

First, could you please open any Office app, navigate to File > Account, and let me know exactly what license name is listed under your student account?

    • If your account shows a Microsoft 365 license: Sometimes old license files get stuck on the device. If you are using a Mac, please run the official License Removal Tool first, and then completely uninstall your current Office package. After that, log in to your Microsoft account portal online and download the correct Office package to see if the M365 license successfully activates.
    • If your account shows an Office 2021 license: This means the license version is strictly determined and managed by your school. In this scenario, you cannot update it yourself, and you will need to contact your IT Admin to get more details or request an upgrade.

Let me know what you find on the Account page, and we can take it from there!
