Outlook Desktop opens SharePoint Excel links as blank Excel file

Environment

  • Office: Microsoft Office Home and Business 2021
  • App: Outlook Desktop
  • Link type: SharePoint Excel (.xlsx) web URL

Issue:

When clicking a SharePoint Excel hyperlink in Outlook Desktop, the link opens directly in Excel Desktop, resulting in a blank file.

Expected:

The link should open in the default browser, where the file displays correctly.

Actual:

Outlook forces the link to open in Excel Desktop, which fails to load the content.

Notes:

  • Office 2021 does not have the setting “Open supported hyperlinks to Office files in Office desktop apps”
  • The same link works in Outlook Web (OWA) or when pasted into Edge/Chrome

Question:

Is this a known Outlook Desktop hyperlink handling issue, and is there a fix or registry/workaround for Office 2021?

    Dear @Chong Xiao En

At this moment, I’ve carried out some testing on my side and can confirm that the files themselves are working normally when opened in the desktop applications. Since the files display correctly in the SharePoint web app but appear as a blank white screen in the desktop apps, this behavior typically indicates a local authentication or sync-related issue rather than a problem with the files.

To help us isolate the cause, could you please provide clarification on the following points:

    • How are the files being opened in the desktop app? (From File Explorer (synced via OneDrive), a OneDrive folder created using “Add shortcut to OneDrive”, or by selecting “Open in desktop app” directly from SharePoint Online)
    • Does the issue occur on multiple devices, or only on a single device? If possible, please check whether the same behavior occurs on another computer using the same account.
    • Which desktop applications are affected? Is this limited to Excel, or does it also occur in Word, PowerPoint, or all Office desktop apps?
    • Does the issue impact only files shared with you, or does it also occur with files that you personally own in SharePoint or OneDrive?
    • Can you successfully open the same file in the desktop app when selecting “Open in desktop app” directly from the SharePoint web interface?
    • Are you signed into the Office desktop applications using the same account that you use to access SharePoint Online in your browser?
    • Are these devices managed by your organization, or are they personal/unmanaged devices?
    • When did you first notice this issue? Was there any recent change before it started, such as a Windows update, Office update, password change, or device sign-in change?
    • Are other users in your organization experiencing similar symptoms, or is this limited to a specific user or group?

In the meantime, I suggest trying the following steps:

    Step 1: Reset OneDrive

    • Fully exit OneDrive, then press Windows + R and run: %localappdata%\Microsoft\OneDrive\onedrive.exe /reset
    • After that, reopen OneDrive and allow it to complete a full resync.
    • For additional guidance, please refer to: Reset OneDrive.

Step 2: Sign out and sign back into Office desktop apps

    • Open any Office app (Word or Excel) > File > Account > Sign out of all accounts.
    • Close all Office apps, reopen one, and sign in again using the same account that works in SharePoint Online.

Step 3: Repair the Office installation  Repairing Office can often resolve issues where files open as a blank or white screen:

    1. Right-click the Start button and select Installed apps
    2. Locate your Microsoft 365 or Office product
    3. Click the ellipsis (…), and Select Modify
    4. Start with Quick Repair
    5. If the issue persists, repeat the process and select Online Repair

A system restart may be required after the repair completes.  For more information, please refer to Repair an Office application

Note: Please understand that my initial response does not always resolve the issue immediately. However, with your help and more detailed information, we can work together to find a solution.

I hope this information is useful. Additionally, as other users have raised similar concerns and may not be aware of where to share their feedback, I hope this response helps clarify the situation and suggests a potential next step. Highlighting this information can make it more visible to others in the community who may be facing the same issue, making it easier for them to find guidance and contribute their feedback as well.

Thank you again for your time and for raising this important usability concern. If you have any further questions or need additional assistance, please don’t hesitate to reach out.

I look forward to your thoughts on this.

This behavior is consistent with how Office/Outlook and hyperlinks to Office documents work and is related to how Office resolves links and chooses the desktop app rather than the browser. It is effectively a hyperlink-handling limitation rather than a configurable option in Office 2021.

    From the available information:

    • Office products resolve file links in specific ways that are not always user-configurable. For example, when inserting hyperlinks to files on mapped drives, Office converts them to UNC paths and there is no setting to change this behavior; the recommendation is to work with the way Office resolves links rather than against it.
    • Similarly, when opening SharePoint/OneDrive files, there is logic that chooses whether to open in the browser or in the desktop app. In current Microsoft 365 environments this is influenced by options such as Open in app and default app selection, but Office 2021 does not expose the newer “Open supported hyperlinks to Office files in Office desktop apps” toggle.
    • For SharePoint URLs, adding query parameters can change how the file is opened. For example, appending ?web=1 to a SharePoint document URL forces opening in the browser instead of directly in the Office application.

Given that Office 2021 does not provide a UI setting to change this behavior, the practical workaround is to adjust the links themselves so they always open in the browser:

    1. Edit the SharePoint Excel links used in Outlook so they include ?web=1 at the end of the URL (or preserve any existing query string and append &web=1).
    2. Use these modified URLs in emails. When clicked, they open in the browser rather than being forced into Excel Desktop.

There is no documented registry-based fix in the provided material for Office 2021 to globally change Outlook Desktop’s handling of these SharePoint Excel hyperlinks. The supported workaround is to modify the URLs so they explicitly instruct SharePoint/Office Online to open in the browser.
