A family of Microsoft products that enable users to capture, organize, and reuse notes electronically.
Hi, Steve Buss
It sounds like OneNote itself may not be the only problem here, the delay can also come from the Windows input stack, add-ins, or even the older OneNote app build, so typing feels like it is “catching up” after you already finished. If the basic update/size cleanup steps did not help, it is worth testing a few different angles.
Here are some suggestions you can try:
First, check which OneNote app you are using. If it is OneNote for Windows 10, it is recommended that you move to the desktop OneNote app instead, because the Windows 10 app support ended in October 2025.
Next, try opening OneNote in Safe Mode. It is suggested that you press Windows + R, type onenote /safe, and test typing there. This helps tell whether add-ins or notebook content are causing the lag.
It is also recommended that you check Windows language/input settings, especially if they use more than one keyboard language or an IME. Office typing-lag threads often point to input method conflicts as a cause, so keeping only the needed keyboard layout can help.
Another one that gets missed: test with a different default printer, like “Microsoft Print to PDF”. Office slowdowns can be caused by the printer driver or a network printer being set as default.
Thank you for your patience in reading, I hope this information has been helpful to you.
