OneDrive icons & context menu missing (v26.040.0301.0001) on Windows 11 Insider Build 26200

Hi everyone,

I am experiencing a persistent issue with OneDrive (64-bit version 26.040.0301.0001) where file status icons and context menu shell extensions have completely disappeared.

The Problem:

  • Missing Status Icons: The "Cloud", "Green Checkmark", and "Solid Green" icons are no longer visible in File Explorer.

Missing Context Menu: OneDrive-specific options (e.g., "Free up space", "Always keep on this device") are absent from the right-click menu.

Account Integration Issue: I am unable to add my personal Microsoft account to Windows/OneDrive; the process fails to complete or doesn't trigger at all.

System Specifications:

Edition: Windows 11 Pro

Version: 25H2

OS Build: 26200.7840

Experience: Windows Feature Experience Pack 1000.26100.291.0

OneDrive Version: 26.040.0301.0001 (64-bit)

Troubleshooting Performed:

OneDrive Reset: Executed %localappdata%\Microsoft\OneDrive\onedrive.exe /reset multiple times with no effect.

Manual Cleanup: Deleted OneDrive application data from %localappdata%\Microsoft\OneDrive.

Registry Intervention: Due to a problematic uninstallation, I had to manually remove OneDrive-related registry keys before reinstalling.

Clean Reinstall: Even after a clean installation, the app automatically updates to version 26.040.0301.0001, returning to the same broken state.

It seems the shell extensions are failing to register or are being suppressed in this specific Insider build. Are there known compatibility issues between Build 26200 and this OneDrive version? Should I investigate specific ShellIconOverlayIdentifiers in the registry, or is there a way to force the re-registration of the shell extensions for this build?

Thank you for any insights!

    Hi @Dom

Thank you for the detailed description.

Based on reports from other users on recent Windows, there have been multiple cases where OneDrive shell integrations fail to load correctly, leading to missing sync overlay icons and OneDrive context menu entries, even though OneDrive itself is installed and running. Similar symptoms have been observed after Windows Insider updates where File Explorer shell extensions do not fully register or are suppressed after servicing updates.

At this time, there is no public Microsoft documentation confirming compatibility issues specifically between Build 26200 and OneDrive version 26.040.0301.0001. However, Insider builds are pre‑release, and regressions affecting File Explorer shell extensions have been reported by the community, particularly around context menu and overlay handling.

A few important notes based on your scenario:

    • OneDrive overlay icons and context menu items rely on registered shell extensions (for example, FileSyncShell64.dll). If these extensions don’t load correctly, the exact symptoms you’re seeing can occur.
    • On Windows 11, OneDrive options may only appear under “Show more options” (classic context menu). However, if they are missing there as well, it typically indicates a shell integration issue rather than UI behavior alone.
    • Manual registry cleanup and repeated reinstallations can leave OneDrive in a state where it auto‑updates to the latest build but still fails to properly re‑register Explorer extensions afterward.

    Regarding registry investigation:

    • The ShellIconOverlayIdentifiers area has historically been used by OneDrive, but on newer Windows 11 builds this is increasingly managed internally by Explorer. Editing these keys directly is not recommended unless guided by Microsoft Support article, as incorrect changes can affect other shell handlers.
    • Re‑registering the OneDrive shell extension via regsvr32 is a commonly suggested troubleshooting step, but results can vary on Insider builds due to ongoing platform changes.

Because this appears to be Insider‑build‑specific behavior and persists after clean reinstall attempts, the most appropriate next steps are:

    • Submit feedback via Feedback Hub, including repro steps and build details.
    • If this system is critical, consider rolling back to a non‑Insider (stable) Windows build, where OneDrive shell integrations are generally more stable.
    • For deeper analysis (especially given manual registry intervention and account‑integration issues), contacting Microsoft Support is recommended so they can review Explorer and OneDrive diagnostic logs directly.

Thank you for testing Insider builds and sharing your findings, this type of detailed report is exactly what helps surface regressions early. If you have additional updates after submitting feedback, feel free to share them with the forum.
