Hi @Doug Lytle,
I hope you're doing well.
Thank you for reaching out regarding the persistent error you are encountering with Microsoft Visio. I understand that the integrated Repair Now function has failed to resolve the issue and causes the application to close unexpectedly.
To address this technical discrepancy, please follow the formalized troubleshooting procedures outlined below:
1/ Kindly try with manual Online Repair
Since the standard repair prompt is ineffective, a comprehensive Online Repair via the Windows Control Panel is required to verify and replace corrupted installation files.
- Navigate to the Start Menu and select Settings > Apps > Installed Apps.
- Locate Microsoft Visio (or your Microsoft 365 suite) within the list.
- Select the Options (three dots) menu and choose Modify.
- Select the Online Repair radio button and click Repair. Note that this process requires a stable internet connection and may take several minutes to complete.
2/ Execute Visio in Safe Mode
If the error persists, it may be caused by a conflict with an integrated Add-in. You can isolate this by launching the application in Safe Mode:
- Press the Windows Key + R to open the Run dialog box.
- Input
visio /safe(please notice the space) and press Enter. - If the application opens without error, navigate to File > Options > Add-ins to disable any third-party extensions that may be causing the instability.
3/ Reset Visio user profile settings
Corrupted user registry settings can cause this exact startup failure.
- Close Visio.
- Press Windows + R and type:
regedit - Navigate to:
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Office\ 16.0\Visio - Rename the Visio key (e.g., Visio_old)
- Reopen Visio
This forces Visio to recreate clean settings.
4/ Update Office
Some Visio crashes can be caused by a problematic Office build, so installing the latest updates may help.
- Open any Office app (for example, Word or Excel).
- Go to File > Account.
- Under Office Updates, select Update Options > Update Now.
Note: while these repair processes are designed to preserve your data, it is recommended that all .vsdx files are synchronized to a cloud service or backed up locally before proceeding.
I hope that these steps will restore full functionality to your software. Please do not hesitate to reach out if further assistance is required.
Looking forward to your response.
