Onenote has automatically stored all my files to my personal account, even though I wasn't even aware that it logged me on on it. Whenever I edit files it always says Im logged into the institutional account, so I'm not sure why it's storing it in my personal drive. Anyway how do I stop this from happening and how do I change the files to my institutional account?

    Hello ol,

I understand that you are having issue with OneNote. I truly understand how you feel. Let me assist you go through this situation.

Based on your description, it seems like you’re running into a very common OneNote multi‑account behavior, OneNote can be signed into multiple accounts at the same time (personal + work/school).

    • Each notebook is permanently tied to the account where it was created (personal OneDrive vs work/school OneDrive or SharePoint).
    • Even if OneNote shows you as logged into your institutional account, editing a notebook stored in your personal OneDrive will still save to your personal account.
    • OneNote does not automatically “switch” storage when you change accounts — it keeps saving to the notebook’s original location.

So, the issue is not authentication, it’s notebook location. For more information, you can check at this page: https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/office/use-multiple-microsoft-accounts-with-onenote-for-windows-10-5afff855-54ee-47e4-a773-db048d4ac299

Here is my suggestion for you:

PART 1 — Stop OneNote from saving to your personal account

Remove the personal account from OneNote (Windows)

This prevents new notebooks from being created in your personal OneDrive.

    1. Open OneNote (desktop app)
    2. Select Settings and More (⋯) > Settings
    3. Select Accounts
    4. Select your personal Microsoft account
    5. Select Sign out

After this, OneNote will only create new notebooks in your institutional account. This does not move existing notebooks. It only stops future mis‑storage.

PART 2 — Move your existing notebooks to the institutional account (correct method)

It does not allow changing a notebook’s storage account directly. The only supported method is to create a new notebook in the institutional account and move content into it.

Step‑by‑step: Move notebooks from personal > institutional

    A. Create a new notebook in your institutional account

    1. In OneNote, select File > New
    2. Choose your work/school OneDrive or SharePoint location
    3. Name the notebook
    4. Select Create

    B. Move content from the personal notebook

    1. Open the personal‑account notebook
    2. Right‑click a section tab
    3. Select Move or Copy
    4. Choose the new institutional notebook
    5. Select Move
    6. Repeat for all sections

    C. Force sync and verify location

    1. Press Shift + F9 to sync all notebooks
    2. Open OneNote for the web
    3. Sign in with your institutional account
    4. Confirm the notebook appears there

I hope this will help with your situation. Please feel free to reach back if you have further update or more questions.

    Best Regards,
