You can remove an old phone but you can't add a new one.

Hello,

If you want to change the phone number used to receive 2FA code then the AI answer is not correct.

Go to https://account.live.com > Security > Manage how I sign in, change it there instead.

There is no option to add new phone number.

Here is what I found, considering we know our email and password.

Sign-in preferences

To help keep your account secure, uncheck any email address or phone number you don't use so it can't be used to sign in. Avoid linking a work or school email to your personal account. Use only emails or phone numbers you own.

And you can't change either. Phone is not listed. Email, grayed out. On previous screen, the phone says "None". No one's fault, really. Just an observation.

To change the phone number on a personal Microsoft account:

Go to Manage how you sign in to Microsoft: https://account.live.com/names/manage and sign in.
Under Your info / Account alias, find the list of email addresses and phone numbers associated with the account.
To add a new number, select Add phone number, follow the prompts, and complete verification.
(Optional) After adding the new number, select Make primary if this should be the main sign-in/recovery alias.
To remove the old number, select Remove next to that phone number.

Notes:

A phone number or email used as the primary alias cannot be removed until another email/phone number is added and set as primary.
These aliases all share the same account settings, subscriptions, and password.
