Welcome Sam to the Q&A forum!
From what you described, I understand that after installing Windows updates, your PC repeatedly asks you to sign in again and reset your PIN, as if Windows Hello is being set up for the first time. Besides the methods Q&A Assist has provided, you can try the additional steps below:
1. Reset ARSO (Automatic Restart Sign‑On)
ARSO automatically signs you in after a Windows update or restart so Windows can finish background setup tasks.
Settings > Accounts > Sign‑in options > Additional settings
Toggle ON: Use my sign‑in info to automatically finish setting up after an update
If it’s already turned on, please turn it off, then turn it back on.
This forces Windows to:
- Automatically sign in to your account after the restart
- Complete user‑specific background setup tasks (profile initialization, services, updates)
- Lock the device again once setup is finished
After enabling this, restart the PC and observe whether the PIN behavior changes after the next update.
2. Clear the corrupted Ngc folder to reset broken or corrupted Windows Hello PIN data
Sign in using your password (not PIN).
Open File Explorer > View > Show > Hidden items, then uncheck Hide protected operating system files.
Go to: C:\Windows\ServiceProfiles\LocalService\AppData\Local\Microsoft\
Right‑click Ngc > Properties > Security > Advanced.
Next to Owner, click Change > enter Administrators > Check Names > OK > check Replace owner on subcontainers and objects > Apply.
Reopen Advanced Security > Add > Select a principal > Administrators > grant Full control.
Open the Ngc folder and delete all contents (do not delete the folder itself).
Restart the PC.
Go to Settings > Accounts > Sign‑in options and set up a new PIN.
Hope this helps. Please let me know how it goes!
