Viewing SharePoint PDF files via Prisma browser is failing

In Edge, Chrome, and Firefox, we can view SharePoint PDF files in the browser without issue. However, when we view SharePoint PDF files in the Prisma browser, we get an error screen with the message "Can't preview this file. Open the file or download it to view in your desktop app."

In Prisma, we can download the PDF file and we can Open in app, it's just the Open in browser that is having the issue for PDF files. In Dev tools I came across the error X-Msdavext_error "Access denied. Before opening files in this location, you must first browse to the web site and select the option to login automatically."

Does anyone know if this is a fixable issue with the Prisma browser and SharePoint PDF files, or if it's a known Microsoft limitation?

    Dear @Callie Hagedorn,

Thank you for reaching out to Microsoft Q&A forum.

I understand you're having trouble viewing SharePoint PDF files via the Prisma browser. From my research, it’s likely that Prisma is being identified by SharePoint as an "unmanaged" or "untrusted" client during the specific handshake required for inline PDF rendering. This is the reason why standard browsing works, but the specialized PDF preview engine which follows a different authentication path is failing to receive the necessary security tokens. The error message X-Msdavext_error "Access denied" is a common indicator that the browser is attempting to use a legacy WebDAV or "File Open" protocol. This protocol requires an active, persistent session, which Prisma’s security architecture may intentionally isolate to maintain secure browsing practices.

As a forum moderator, I genuinely wish I could directly access your account or delve into the backend systems to diagnose and fix this for you. However, our role here is limited to providing general guidance and solutions that can be applied by users.

For problems of this nature, I recommend that the Global Admin in your organization create a service request with Microsoft Support. A technical support engineer can perform a remote session to investigate the situation, verify the backend configurations, and run any necessary synchronization tools to resolve the problem. If the issue requires further attention, they can escalate it to a specialized team for deeper analysis. Ask The Global Admin in your organization to create a service request with Microsoft support to get advanced technical assistance and diagnostics. Hello @Callie Hagedorn

You can start by checking the PDFium setting under Browser Security → Protected Browsing, as blocking it will prevent PDFs from rendering in-browser.

Inside your Strata Cloud Manager go to:

    1. Configuration > Prisma Browser > Policy Rules > Browser Security > [Select your rule] > Edit > Browser Security controls > Protected Browsing (Attack surface reduction) > PDFium
    2. Change the value from Block (or Unset) to Allow.
    3. Save changes
    4. Review changes and published
    5. Reload engine on your impact users Prisma

Please let me know if this work for you.

PDF viewing in Microsoft 365 for the web is being deprecated and is not supported in all integration scenarios. Specifically, PDF viewing is no longer supported as part of the Cloud Storage Partner Program, and Microsoft is also deprecating this support for products such as OneDrive. OneDrive no longer uses Microsoft 365 for the web for PDF viewing and instead relies on the browser’s native PDF capabilities.

The error in Prisma when choosing “Open in browser” for SharePoint PDFs, while “Download” and “Open in app” still work, is consistent with this deprecation and with environments where the browser or integration layer does not support the required PDF viewing path. In supported browsers (Edge, Chrome, Firefox) the native PDF viewer handles the file correctly, but Prisma’s browser environment does not appear to provide equivalent support for the SharePoint/Office web PDF preview scenario.

Given the documented deprecation of PDF viewing in Microsoft 365 for the web and OneDrive, this behavior is effectively a limitation of the integration path rather than something that can be fixed from the SharePoint/Microsoft 365 side. The supported workarounds are:

    1. Use a standard browser (Edge, Chrome, Firefox) where native PDF viewing works.
    2. Use Open in app from SharePoint/OneDrive so the PDF opens in the desktop PDF application.
    3. Download the PDF and open it locally.

If Prisma requires inline PDF preview, its vendor would need to ensure that its browser environment either exposes a native PDF viewer compatible with SharePoint’s download/preview flow or handles PDFs independently of Microsoft 365 for the web, since Microsoft is not supporting this integration path for PDFs.
