    Hello Tom Abernatha,

Thank you for posting your question in the Microsoft Q&A forum!

I understand that you are having issue with OneNote in Read only state. I truly understand how you feel. Let me assist you go through this situation.

    I suggest you try this:

    1. Check if the Notebook Is in an Older Format

Older formats trigger Compatibility Mode, preventing new-version features.

    How to check the format:

    • Open the notebook in OneNote for Windows.
    • Look at the notebook title bar.
    • If you see [Compatibility Mode], it’s in the old 2007 format.

    How to upgrade the notebook:

    • Select File > Info.
    • Next to the notebook, choose Settings > Properties.
    • In Notebook Properties, select Convert to 2010–2016 (or convert to 2010–2013, depending on version).

After conversion, the notebook becomes editable again in the new OneNote.

    2. If It’s a Standalone Section (.one file), OneNote Will Be Read‑Only

OneNote no longer supports opening old standalone section files directly — they always open Read‑Only.

    Fix (official Microsoft method):

    • Sign in to OneDrive https://onedrive.live.com/login
    • Create a new notebook on OneDrive.
    • Open that notebook in the OneNote desktop app (NOT “OneNote for Windows 10”).
    • In File Explorer, right‑click each standalone .one file > Open with > OneNote.
    • In OneNote, the section appears under Opened Sections.
    • Right‑click the section > Move or Copy > move it into the new notebook.
    • Delete the old standalone file after confirming it's synced.

This imports the section into a modern notebook so it becomes fully editable.

    3. Make Sure You're Using the Correct OneNote Version

If you have OneNote for Windows 10 AND OneNote (Desktop) installed, Windows may open notebooks with the wrong app.

You can set the default version manually:

    • Open Settings > System > Apps > Default apps.
    • Choose Set defaults by app.
    • Select OneNote (the desktop version).
    • Set it as default for the listed file types.

This ensures notebooks always open in the version that supports conversion.

I hope this will help with your situation. Please feel free to reach back if you have further update or more questions.

    Best Regards,

If your OneNote is in a read-only state, it may be due to several reasons. One common cause is that Microsoft OneNote is transitioning to a new version, and the older version may be set to read-only mode. You may also encounter issues if the installation process for the new version is not completed successfully.

Here are some steps you can take to resolve the issue:

    1. Check for Updates: Make sure you have the latest version of OneNote installed from the Microsoft Store. Sometimes, updating the application can resolve read-only issues.
    2. Reinstall OneNote: If updating does not work, you might want to uninstall OneNote and then reinstall it from the Microsoft Store. This can help ensure that you have a clean installation.
    3. Internet Connection: Ensure that your device is connected to the internet, as this is required for downloading updates or new versions.
    4. Check for Licensing Issues: If there are licensing issues with your Office suite, it might affect OneNote's functionality. Make sure your Office license is valid and up to date.

If the problem persists, you may want to consult Microsoft support for further assistance.
