Hey,

Is there anyway to help with the pdf export of one note?

I have read many time about setting up a A4 guide on the page but cant find it, nor importing a form of template which help me to NOT put pictures nor handwriting notes where the pages split.

In almost all the version - web, app on mac book or app on tablet - pdf export remove most of my handwriting.

can you help?

    Hi Claire

Thank you for reaching out to Microsoft Q&A Forum and sharing your concern.

The View > Paper Size feature you may have read about is available only in OneNote for Windows (Desktop). At this time, OneNote for Mac, OneNote for the web, and tablet/mobile apps do not support the “Set Page Size” feature.

On these platforms, OneNote uses an infinite canvas, which means there is no built‑in A4 page guide or printable boundary that can be enabled. As a result, there is also no native A4 template that prevents handwriting or images from crossing page breaks during PDF export.

When exporting to PDF, OneNote must “paginate” this infinite canvas. If handwritten strokes, images, or content containers extend beyond what OneNote interprets as a printable area, they may be: split across pages, cropped, or omitted entirely in the resulting PDF.

Based on similar cases, the following workarounds have helped some users.

    • Use “Print to PDF” instead of Export: Printing the page and selecting a PDF printer can sometimes produce better results than using the Export function, especially for handwritten content.
    • Print to PDF from OneNote for the Web: Open the notebook in OneNote for the web and ensure it is fully synced. If your handwritten notes display correctly in the browser, use the browser’s Print option and select Save as PDF.

Additional workaround details involving third‑party PDF creation tools have been shared with you via private message.

To address your concerns regarding exporting OneNote pages to PDF, here are some points to consider:

    1. Page Setup: To set up your OneNote pages to match A4 size, ensure that your page layout is configured correctly. While OneNote does not have a direct A4 template, you can manually adjust the page size in the settings. However, specific guidance on setting an A4 template directly in OneNote is not detailed in the provided context.
    2. Handwriting and Pictures: Exporting handwritten notes and images can sometimes lead to issues where content is lost or not displayed correctly in the PDF. This is a known limitation across various platforms (web, Mac, tablet). Unfortunately, the context does not provide specific solutions to prevent this loss during export.
    3. Exporting to PDF: When exporting to PDF, ensure that you are using the latest version of OneNote, as updates may improve the export functionality. If you continue to experience issues, consider reaching out to Microsoft support for further assistance.
    4. Alternative Options: If the built-in export features are not meeting your needs, you might explore third-party applications or tools that specialize in converting OneNote content to PDF while preserving the layout and handwritten notes better than the native export functionality.

Unfortunately, there are no specific templates or settings mentioned in the context that would directly solve the issue of preventing content loss during PDF export. It may be beneficial to check for updates or community forums for additional tips from other users experiencing similar issues.
