Hello Team,

Right now I am experiencing a very hard time trying to recover my personal microsoft account.

Introduction

This account was long active and i have it linked to almost everything I do, since my OneDrive is my Cloud service of choice. Last Sunday I opened my Laptop to try and get some work done, then I got the notification, that i should sign back into my microsoft account (so far nothing out of the odinary).
When trying to do so, I entered my password as usual and I was prompted with this message:

Support us in securing your account
We have detected unusual activities in your Microsoft account "***@hotmail.de" (I'm German, so this is crudely translated) or suspect that your login credentials may be compromised.
For your safety and to ensure that only you can access your account, you are asked to verify your identity and change your password.

The only option i had to do so was to use E-mail to send a verification code, which i tried, but after checking multiple times no email was recieved.
So i did this again, this time on my phone and on my personal PC but i never recieved any verification codes to the provided email.

Recovery

So i did some further investigating and used the Sign-in Helper with no success, but I was suggested to use the recovery form. Doing so lead to my account being blocked and i still dont get any verification codes via E-mail.

So what I'm left with currently, is trying to fill out the recovery form again and again to try to get this account back, but looking at others trying this on Reddit or similar discussion platforms I believe the chances of this working are slim.

Which is why im using my Student account now to reach out to YOU!

I hope this finds someone who might be able to help, I really need to have access to the OneDrive as I mentioned earlier and this requires me to be able to sign into my account.
I also checked my other devices, but all of them got signed out of the account.

Summary (TLDR)

After being logged out of my account for unusual activities on my Microsoft account, I couldnt sign back in due to the verification E-mails not being sent or recieved.
I only have a E-mail for verification set up, so no other options are possible.

On suggestion of the Sign-in Helper the submission of the recovery form lead to my account being blocked.

I'm out of ideas how to tackle this problem on my own, so if there are any viable options on fixing this I would greatly appreciate any help!

The account is not necessarily compromised. It depends on the activity the system has detected. For example, if the system detects that the account has been signed in by you from a different location (or via VPN), this may be considered an unusual login pattern, and you will be asked to verify your account as an automated security measure.

I highly recommend checking this link for more information regarding unusual activity error: https://support.microsoft.com/account-billing/what-happens-if-there-s-an-unusual-sign-in-to-your-account-eba43e04-d348-b914-1e95-fb5052d3d8f0

Yes, and just in case issue persists after 48 hours, you may need to wait a longer period, exactly up to a week, before performing another password reset, as stated on the official Microsoft website:

    https://support.microsoft.com/account-billing/troubleshooting-verification-code-issues-409090c4-92b5-42b9-8ae6-bcc97e62fc48#::text=If%20you%20received%20a%20Microsoft%20verification%20code%20that%20you%20did#::text=If%20you%20received%20a%20Microsoft%20verification%20code%20that%20you%20did

To perform a password reset, sign in to account.microsoft.com > click "Forgot Password" > Verify your identity using your available verification method > then reset the password.

Ensure not to sign in or reset the password during this timeframe, as this may reset the lock period.

    Best regards,

Hey there! Nice to meet you!

Since you can't receive the verification codes due to the system detecting unusual activity, kindly try performing these steps to fix the verification method error:

    1. Perform a password reset via InPrivate or Incognito window using different network services.
    2. If it doesn't work, wait exactly 48 hours to perform another password reset.

Important: Please make sure not to attempt to sign in or reset the password within that timeframe (48 hours), as this may reset the lock cooldown.

Thank you for your understanding! Please feel free to let me know if you need anything else.

    Best regards,

    Darhyl

It sounds like you're experiencing a challenging situation with your Microsoft account recovery. Here are some steps you can take based on the information available:

    1. Check Spam/Junk Folder: Sometimes, verification emails can end up in the spam or junk folder of your email. Make sure to check there to see if the verification code was mistakenly filtered.
    2. Use a Different Recovery Method: If email verification is not working, consider using other recovery options if available. For instance, if you have set up a phone number for recovery, you might be able to receive a code via SMS.
    3. Account Recovery Form: Since you've already tried the recovery form, ensure that you provide as much accurate information as possible. This can include previous passwords, answers to security questions, and any other details that might help verify your identity.
    4. Contact Microsoft Support: If you continue to face issues, it may be beneficial to reach out to Microsoft Support directly for assistance. They can provide guidance specific to your situation and help you regain access to your account.
    5. Wait for Account Unlock: If your account has been temporarily blocked due to multiple recovery attempts, it may take some time before you can try again. Ensure you wait for the specified duration before submitting another recovery request.
    6. Use Microsoft’s Help Resources: Utilize the Microsoft support pages and community forums for additional troubleshooting steps and advice from other users who may have faced similar issues.

If you follow these steps, you may improve your chances of recovering your account successfully.

Hi Robin, Getting locked out is frustrating! Since the automated form and emails aren't working, try these 'human' steps:

Check 'Safe Senders': If you can still access the recovery email inbox, make sure @accountprotection.microsoft.com isn't blocked.

Use a Private Window: Try the recovery process again in an Incognito/Private browser tab to avoid cache issues.

Wait 24 hours: Sometimes too many attempts trigger a temporary lock. Stop for a full day, then try again.

    • Contact Global Support: If you're a student, your school's IT department might have a direct line to Microsoft support who can verify your identity. Good luck.
