I wanted to stop using One Drive. It didn't appear to installed on my computer. I backed up all files on thumb drives and I deleted my files on One Drive including the recycle bin. One Drive still appeared on my computer and an article from PC magazine said to use 'Registry' and just delete 'one drive' from the path. There was one (very important excel file I could no longer open). Someone said probably because it was password protected.

I contacted Geek Squad (by phone) and the person who said she removed everything One Drive on my computer and restored all files didn't and really messed it up. Took my computer into Geek Squad in person, they couldn't find it/restore it and almost all my files are gone now. I asked them to also updated my computer to Windows 11. The file I need was created on Windows 10.

I'm wondering if Microsoft can find a previous version of my file somewhere in One Drive or wherever. I have the path from when it did work.

Unfortunately, if you have deleted files from OneDrive, including from the recycle bin, and if the files were not backed up elsewhere, recovery may be quite challenging. OneDrive does have a feature called Files Restore, which allows users to restore files to any point over the past 30 days. However, this feature is only applicable if the files were still in OneDrive and not permanently deleted.

Since you mentioned that you deleted the files from OneDrive and the recycle bin, they are likely permanently removed from OneDrive's storage. Additionally, if the Excel file was password protected, it might complicate recovery attempts if the file was corrupted or not accessible.

If you had synced your OneDrive with your local machine, you might want to check if there are any local copies of the files on your computer. If you have a backup of your system or files from before the deletion, restoring from that backup could be another option.

For future reference, to prevent loss of important files, consider regularly backing up your data to multiple locations, such as external drives or cloud services, and utilize version history features where available.

If you need further assistance, contacting Microsoft Support may provide additional options for recovery, especially if the files were recently deleted and there might be a chance to retrieve them from their systems.

    Hello,

Is this a personal account or a work/school account?

If it is personal account, unfortunately once deleted from Recycle Bin, it is gone. It works as it is designed to do, the files cannot be recovered.

If this is a work/school account, it might be recoverable, depending on each organization's retention policy. Reach out to your organization's IT support team, they would know what the retention policy is for your organization and can recover for you if it is still within the defined retention period.
