Why did screen clipping feature in OneNote for Mac stop working after last week's update (Nov 2025)?

Microsoft seems to have pushed an update last week.  The day of that update, the screen clipping feature on OneNote does not work on my Mac.

I tried to resolve the issue by resetting permissions for screen and system recording, starting, restarting the computer and the app.  None of that worked, so I cleared the cash and even uninstalled and re-installed the program.  The program asks me to grant permissions to do the screen clipping, but after granting permission and restarting my computer the issue still remains.  It will look like it is taking a screen clipping, but no image is captured in OneNote.

Hi Michelle Ols

Thank you for bringing this issue to the Q&A forum.

After receiving your report, I tested the scenario in my environment using OneNote version 16.103.1 (25111624) on macOS Sequoia 15.7.1, and I observed the same behavior you described.

I understand you’ve already tried multiple troubleshooting steps, so I’d like to share two workarounds that might help:

1> Use macOS native screenshot tool: Press Command + Shift + 4 to capture the screen, then paste the image into OneNote manually.

2> Roll back OneNote to a previous version

  • Before rolling back: ensure all notebooks are fully synced; consider a Time Machine snapshot or a full backup.
  • After rollback:

-Turn off Auto-Update to prevent returning to the problematic build.

-Open any Office app > Help > Check for Updates > untick “Automatically keep Microsoft Apps up to date.” Then click Advanced and untick “Automatically download and install.”

-For version details and installers, please reference the Office for Mac Release history page.

If you’re on a Microsoft 365 Business license (based on the tag you chose), you can raise a support ticket in the Microsoft 365 Admin Center. Navigate to Help & Support > Create support request. Consider turning off Support Assistant to avoid automated troubleshooting loops.User's image

Additionally, please help by submitting feedback through the Microsoft Feedback portal so the product team can prioritize a fix.

Thanks again for your patience and collaboration. Please let me know the results after trying these steps so I can assist further.
