Greetings.

Do you think I should use Microsoft Support and Recovery Assistant to solve my problem? If yes, where can I download it?

I am trying to migrate my Outlook from my PC to the cloud-based Outlook. Here is what I did:

1.    I create an account on https://outlook.live.com/

2.    I did that and created [PII removed]

3.    Back on my PC, Outlook, I went to:

4.    File >Add new and added an account using Exchange Server settings

5.    I looked in the data file and noted that it created a new file Microft\outlook******@outlook.com.OST

6.    It seems to open fine.

My Problem is that when I closed Outlook and opened it again, it gave me an error message, "Outlook cannot log on." See attached image.

I hope you can help me

    Hello Baha Habashy

    Welcome to Microsoft Q&A forum

Thank you for reaching out about the "Outlook cannot log on" error you're encountering after setting up your new "@outlook.com" account. I've reviewed the details you shared, and it looks like the issue stems from using the manual Exchange Server setup option, which isn't ideal for consumer @outlook.com accounts (it's better suited for business Exchange environments).

The good news is this is a common hiccup and easy to resolve by recreating your Outlook profile with the automatic setup method. This will properly configure everything for seamless cloud syncing without needing server details. Here the simple Steps to Fix It:

    1. Close Outlook completely (check Task Manager to ensure no processes are running).
    2. Open the Mail Setup tool: Search for "Mail" in the Windows Start menu, then select "Mail (Microsoft Outlook)."
    3. Show and remove the old profile: Click "Show Profiles," select your current profile, and click "Remove." (Don't worry—this won't delete your emails; they're stored safely in your OST file.)
    4. Add a new profile: Click "Add," name it (e.g., "[Your Name] Outlook"), and click "Next."
    5. Set up the account automatically:
      • Enter your email: [Your Email Address]
        • Click "Next" and let it auto-detect the settings (do not choose "Manual setup" or "Exchange"—that's what caused the error).
          • Enter your password when prompted and complete the setup.
          1. Set as default and restart: Select the new profile as default, then close the tool and reopen Outlook. Your emails, calendar, and contacts should now sync from the cloud.

If you have any local data (e.g., old emails in a PST file) that doesn't appear, go to File > Open & Export > Import/Export in Outlook to bring it over.

This should get you up and running in under 10 minutes. If you run into any snags or see a different error, reply to this email with a screenshot, and I'll guide you through it. For extra help, you can also try the built-in Windows "Get Help" app: Search for it in the Start menu, type "Outlook cannot log on," and run the troubleshooter.

Additionally, please note that the consumer version of SARA has been discontinued and integrated into the built-in Windows Get Help app as of late 2024. I recommend using Get Help for simplicity, it's free, already on your PC, and includes Outlook-specific troubleshooters for profile setup and startup issues. I hope this solves the problem! If you have any further concern, please feel free to leave a comment below. I will be happy to help you.

    THANK YOU.

Thank you for your offer to help.

I followed the step you directed. Regretfully, I got the message "Sorry, we couldn't set up the account automatically. Try setting it yourself. Click next." See image one. When I clicked next, I got the second image. which is the same one I got for my original setup. What did I do wrong?

Please note that I am using Outlook Classic, not the new Outlook.

Thank you for your patience and help.

I have news, but still stuck.

To my delight, my new Outlook.com opened OK using the new Outlook Style. See attachd image.

When I tried to go to the Classic Outlook, which I am familiar with and would love to use, it generated the same error message. See image 2

    I welcome your advice
