How do I change assignment editing access once assigned?

We are looking to assign students multi-period assignments on Microsoft Teams; however, we would need to prevent editing access outside of class times. I've tried editing the assignment (but cannot change access once assigned), marking as inactive (but they can still find the assignment and edit it), removing and adding students from the Team (too time consuming). Is there a quick and easy way to do this?

    Hi,

Thank you for posting back. I appreciate your precious time doing tests and sharing with me the detailed information.

I use a student account to access an assignment in Teams which is marked as Inactive, I open the work document in Teams, it shows as below, it's in Read-only mode and only provides the option to Open in Desktop App.

    .

I click Open in Desktop App and launch Word desktop app, sign in the student account and password, it still shows Read-only and Viewing permission.

    .

Then if I continue editing in the document and then save it, it prompts a notification saying We can't save this file because it's read-only. To keep your changes, you'll need to save the document with a new name or in a different location.

    .

Per my tests above, I think that's how it should work when we mark an assignment as Inactive, students won't be able to edit the original work document.

However, I notice that it still provides the Edit option from the screenshot you provided.

May I know if the same situation occurs when your students access the assignment by using both Teams desktop app and Teams for the web app (via browser)?

If yes, considering that more than one student is having the issue, I'm afraid this problem is related to the backend where it needs to further check by the related team by checking your student account and assignment from back end.

So, I recommend you raise a support ticket from the Microsoft 365 admin center, where the related team will collect the background logs and find out the cause of the problem. This would be the most efficient way in handling this case for you.

    Hi,

I have taken some screenshots, to pass onto you and have tested both with a colleague as a student and a student too. When they go into the document itself, they are able to click edit and continue their work.

    Hi,

Thanks for your time and patience. I have finished tests from my side.

Per your description, my understanding is that you want to prevent students from editing assignment once assigned.

I notice you mentioned "marking as inactive (but they can still find the assignment and edit it)"

When testing from my side, if I mark an assignment as Inactive, students can't edit the assignment anymore. When they open the assignment, it is marked as Inactive, when they hover over the Inactive button, it says "Your educator has made this assignment inactive. It can't be edited or turned in anymore", as shown below. They can't edit work, document is in read-only mode.

    .

If it's not the same situation from your side, could you share more details about student can still find the assignment and edit it?

How do you mark an assignment as Inactive? By clicking the 3 dots next to an assignment and choose "Mark as inactive"?

We look forward to hearing from you; If my understanding of the scenario is not consistent with yours, feel free to point it out.

Please understand that our initial reply may not always immediately resolve the issue. However, with your help and more detailed information, we can work together to find a solution.

Thanks for your time and cooperation! We hope you have a nice day, stay safe and healthy.
