    Based on what you described, it sounds like the Office that came with your Dell laptop may have been a trial version of Microsoft 365, which usually lasts only a month or sometimes just a few days, depending on the promotion or offer.

    Unfortunately, without a full license or an active subscription, Office apps will switch to read-only mode, which is why you’re unable to edit your Word file.

    If I understand you correctly, Computers are now sold without the Microsoft office program. Is that correct?

    I tried to download Microsoft Office from the Microsoft.com . It still won't let me edit the file. I think it's a bug. New computer and 2 days license

    Thanks!When I bought my Dell laptop I already had a Microsoft account. I didn't check to see if I had a Microsoft Office license. I only used the internet.A few months later I couldn't open an old Word file and found in my Microsoft account that my Microsoft 365 subscription expired on December 1, 2024. The purchase was on November 29, 2024. I could not open the old Word file . A warning came up that the subscription had expired. And I was surprised that it was a new computer bought from Costco. It is possible that there was no Office pre-installed, not sure. Now when I open the Word file, it says that the subscription expired December 1, 2024.
