CAPICOM Versions

Note

CAPICOM 2.1.0.2 was available in the Windows SDK for use in the following operating systems: Windows Server 2008, Windows Vista, and Windows XP. For x64 and use in later operating systems, instead use .NET or .NET Framework to implement security features. For more alternatives and addtional information, see Alternatives to Using CAPICOM.

CAPICOM 1.0 provides the following functionality:

  • Generation and verification of PKCS #7 based digital signatures
  • Encryption and decryption of data by using certificates
  • Encryption and decryption of data by using passwords

CAPICOM 2.0 includes the functionality of CAPICOM 1.0 and adds the following functionality:

  • Generation and verification of Authenticode digital signatures
  • Support for file-based credentials
  • Robust certificate store searching
  • Generation of hashes of arbitrary data
  • Support for the Advanced Encryption Standard (AES) algorithm
  • Support for advanced certificate properties, such as Policies and Templates
