Manage Work Items in Work Item Only View (Team Web Access)

You can access Team Web Access in Work Item Only View (WIOV) for Visual Studio Team Foundation Server without having a client access license (CAL). For more information, see the following page on the Microsoft Web site: Visual Studio 2010 Licensing White Paper.

Required Permissions

To access WIOV, you must be assigned to the Work Item Only View Users group for the server that hosts the team projects and team project collections that you want to access.

To create and modify work items that are assigned to you, you must be a member of the Contributors group or your View work items in this node and Edit work items in this node permissions must be set to Allow. For more information, see Team Foundation Server Permissions.

Common Tasks

To connect to a team project

  1. Open a browser window, and type a URL that uses the following form:

    http://ServerName:Port/tfs/Web

    • ServerName is the name of the server that hosts Team Foundation Server.

    • Port is the port that Team Foundation Server uses; the default value is 8080. If your server uses a different port number, you must specify it in the URL.

  2. If you are connecting to your team project for the first time, perform the following steps on the Select a Team Project to work with page:

    1. In the Project Collections list, click the name of the team project collection that you want to open.

    2. In the Projects list, click the team project that contains your work items.

  3. If the Connect to Team Foundation Server page appears, perform the following steps to provide your credentials:

    1. Type a URL that uses the following form, where the same descriptions given in step 1 apply:

      http://ServerName:Port/tfs/Web

    2. In Username and Password, type your user name and your password.

    3. To cache your credentials, select the Remember me check box.

    4. Click Connect.

      Note

      You must supply your credentials only the first time that you log on to Team Web Access if you select the Remember me check box and then successfully access a team project in Team Foundation Server.

To connect to a different team project

  • Click the arrow next to the name of the project collection or team project to which you are connected, and perform one of the following steps:

    • If the name of the team project that you want to open appears in the list, click that name.

    • If the name of the team project that you want to open does not appear in the list, click <Connect to a different project>.

      The Connect - Team Web Access Server dialog box opens.

      Click the name of the project collection, click the name of the team project to which you want to connect, and then click OK.

To add work items to a team project

  1. Click the New Work Item arrow, and then click an item on the All Work Item Types menu, such as Bug, Task, or Issue.

  2. In the work item form, specify appropriate information for each field.

    Fields that contain data that is not valid display a yellow background.

    Note

    A caution icon appears on any tab that contains values that violate validation rules. You must correct the information before you can save changes.

  3. Click Save & Close.

To find a work item based on its ID number

  1. In Team Web Access, in the Work Item# box, type the ID number of the work item for which you want to view details.

  2. Click Go.
