The modern redesign of Outlook for Windows offers your business reduced ownership costs, quicker AI access, and streamlined IT management with a consistent user experience.
Microsoft suggests onboarding new users directly in the new Outlook, rather than classic Outlook. This approach reduces later migrations and allows users to access the latest features and AI tools from the start.
This article outlines recommended strategies for IT administrators to use to onboard new users in new Outlook.
Pin new Outlook to the Windows Taskbar
Pinning new Outlook to the Windows Taskbar allows users to easily discover and get started using the app. For instructions on app pinning, see Configure the Windows Taskbar Pinned Apps with Policy Settings.
Set new Outlook as the default app handler
You can also set new Outlook as the default app handler for files that Outlook can manage, so users have a consistent experience in the app.
To create an image with custom app defaults and add it, follow the instructions in Export or Import Default Application Associations.

Automatically switch users from classic to new Outlook if classic Outlook is installed by using the Windows registry
If new users have both classic and new Outlook installed on their device, you can still ensure that they get started in new Outlook by setting the UseNewOutlook registry key to 1. This setting automatically switches users to new Outlook when they launch classic Outlook. Users can easily switch back to classic Outlook using the toggle in the new Outlook, if needed.
To enable automatic switch from classic to new Outlook, set the following Windows registry key:
*[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\office\16.0\outlook\preferences]" UseNewOutlook"=dword:00000001*
To disable automatic switching from classic to new Outlook, set the following Windows registry key:
*[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\office\16.0\outlook\preferences]"UseNewOutlook"=dword:00000000*
Admin-controlled migration for new users
To encourage new users to switch to new Outlook from classic Outlook through in-app nudges, use the admin-controlled migration policy. Setting this policy triggers a few rounds of in-app notices before automatically switching users to new Outlook. Users can always switch back to classic Outlook if they'd like. For more information about this policy, see Policy for Admin-Controlled Migration to new Outlook for Windows.
