Get change notifications for chats using Microsoft Graph
Change notifications enable you to subscribe to changes (create and update) to chats. You can get notified whenever a chat is created or updated. You can also get the resource data in the notifications and therefore avoid calling the API to get the payload.
Continue with this article about scenarios for the chat resource. Or, find out about change notifications for other Microsoft Teams resources.
Note
If you request a subscription expirationDateTime that is more than 1 hour in the future, you must subscribe to lifecycle notifications by including a lifecycleNotificationUrl property in your subscription request. Otherwise your subscription request will fail with the following error message: lifecycleNotificationUrl is a required property for subscription creation on this resource when the expirationDateTime value is set to greater than 1 hour.

Notification payloads for user-specific properties
When you provide the query string parameter notifyOnUserSpecificProperties with value true
during subscription creation, two types of payloads with different sets of information are sent to the subscriber. One type contains user-specific properties; the other doesn't contain user-specific properties.
Note: The query string parameter notifyOnUserSpecificProperties is supported only for chat subscriptions in user context, specifically for subscriptions to a particular chat or at the user level.
The following payload describes the information sent in a request for notifications that contain user-specific properties. The payload contains a subset of properties from the chat schema, including the viewpoint property with a non-null value, specific to the subscribing user. The omission of other properties from the chat schema doesn't imply any change in their values.
Note: When a user hides a chat in the Teams client, they receive a notification with
isHidden: true
in the viewpoint property; however, no notification withisHidden: false
is sent when the chat becomes visible again after a new message arrives. To determine if the chat is no longer hidden, the subscriber must compare the lastMessageReadDateTime in the viewpoint property with the createdDateTime of the new message. If createdDateTime is later than the lastMessageReadDateTime, the chat is visible. The subscriber must have an active subscription to receive change notifications about messages in the chat to be notified of new messages in a hidden chat. When the user then opens the chat and reads the new message, a notification is sent withisHidden: false
and an updated lastMessageReadDateTime in the viewpoint property.

Notifications without resource data
The following decrypted payload describes the information sent in a request for notifications without resource data. This particular payload signifies that a new chat has been created.
{
"subscriptionId": "8d85051d-779d-45bc-be92-e433f0a5d8ac",
"changeType": "Created",
"tenantId": "<<--TenantForWhichNotificationWasSent-->>",
"clientState": "<<--SpecifiedClientState-->>",
"subscriptionExpirationDateTime": "2021-06-03T10:26:09.8959595+00:00",
"resource": "chats('19:1273a016-201d-4f95-8083-1b7f99b3edeb_976f4b31-fd01-4e0b-9178-29cc40c14438@unq.gbl.spaces')",
"resourceData": {
"id": "19:1273a016-201d-4f95-8083-1b7f99b3edeb_976f4b31-fd01-4e0b-9178-29cc40c14438@unq.gbl.spaces",
"@odata.type": "#microsoft.graph.chat",
"@odata.id": "chats('19:1273a016-201d-4f95-8083-1b7f99b3edeb_976f4b31-fd01-4e0b-9178-29cc40c14438@unq.gbl.spaces')"
}
}
The resource and @odata.id properties can be used to make calls to Microsoft Graph to get the payload for the chat details. GET calls always return the current state of the chat details. If the chat details were updated between when the notification is sent and when the chat details are retrieved, the operation returns the updated chat details.
