Set up your SharePoint connection

This article outlines the steps to create a SharePoint connection.

Supported authentication types

The SharePoint connector supports the following authentication types for copy and Dataflow Gen2 respectively.

Set up your connection for Dataflow Gen2

You can connect Dataflow Gen2 in Microsoft Fabric to SharePoint Online list using Power Query connectors. Follow these steps to create your connection:

  1. Check capabilities to make sure your scenario is supported.
  2. Get data in Fabric.
  3. Connect to a SharePoint Online list.

Capabilities

  • Site URL

Get data

To get data in Data Factory:

  1. On the left side of Data Factory, select Workspaces.

  2. From your Data Factory workspace, select New > Dataflow Gen2 to create a new dataflow.

  3. In Power Query, either select Get data in the ribbon or select Get data from another source in the current view.

  4. In the Choose data source page, use Search to search for the name of the connector, or select View more on the right hand side the connector to see a list of all the connectors available in Power BI service.

  5. If you choose to view more connectors, you can still use Search to search for the name of the connector, or choose a category to see a list of connectors associated with that category.

Connect to a SharePoint Online list

To connect to a SharePoint Online list:

  1. Select the SharePoint Online list option in the get data experience. Different apps have different ways of getting to the Power Query Online get data experience. For more information about how to get to the Power Query Online get data experience from your app, go to Where to get data.

  2. If you have access to the SharePoint site picker, use it to locate and select the sites directly on the connection settings page. If not, copy the SharePoint site URL and paste it into the Site URL text box in the SharePoint Online list dialog box.

  3. Enter the name of an on-premises data gateway if needed.

  4. Select the authentication kind, and enter any required credentials.

  5. Select Next.

  6. From the Navigator, you can select a location, then transform the data in the Power Query editor by selecting Transform data.

Set up your connection in Manage connections and gateways

The following table contains a summary of the properties needed for a SharePoint connection:

For specific instructions to set up your connection in Manage connections and gateways, follow these steps:

  1. From the page header in Data Integration service, select Settings > Manage connections and gateways

  2. Select New at the top of the ribbon to add a new data source.

  3. In the New connection pane, choose Cloud, and specify the following fields:

    • Connection name: Specify a name for your connection.
    • Connection type: Select SharePoint for your connection type.
    • SharePoint site URL: The SharePoint Online site URL, for example https://contoso.sharepoint.com/sites/siteName.
  4. Under Authentication method, select your authentication from the drop-down list and complete the related configuration. The SharePoint connector supports the following authentication types:

  5. Under Privacy Level, select the privacy level that you want to apply.

  6. Select Create to create your connection. Your creation is successfully tested and saved if all the credentials are correct. If not correct, the creation fails with errors.

Authentication

This section lists the instructions for each authentication type supported by the SharePoint connector:

Organizational account authentication

Select Edit credentials, which displays the sign in interface. Enter your account and password to sign in your organizational account. After signing in, go back to the New connection page.

Service Principal authentication

Fill in the required properties. You need to specify the tenant ID, service principal client ID, and service principal key when using this authentication.

  • Tenant ID: The tenant ID under which your application resides.
  • Service principal ID: The Application (client) ID of the application registered in Microsoft Entra ID.
  • Service principal key: The application's key.

Workspace identity authentication

Use the workspace’s managed identity for authentication. For more information, see Workspace identity.
