Question

When using O365 I keep getting the following error when sending a mail to OneNote
"OneNote needs to set itself up before you can send to it. Please run OneNote and then try sending again."
Version: Outlook 2016 MSO (16.0.8528.2126)
There is no other OneNote version installed (no windows 10/8 version or any older versions)
Running OneNote as Administrator to "set it up" doesn't change anything.
The default program is set to OneNote 365.
Even if OneNote is open in the background it still prompts the same error.
I've searched arround but can't find any sollutions. It looks like it is expecting some key or file that OneNote doesn't create within O365. I've installed a office 2016 installation without O365 license. Which works fine.
Version 1708, Build 8431.2107
What could cause this issue? Any known sollutions?

Hi,
What's your Windows OS? Are you using Windows 8.1 or Windows 10?
I suggest we can try the following steps to narrow down the issue:
1. Repair Office 365 ProPlus: Go to Control Panel > Programs and Features, select Office 365 ProPlus, click Change > Online Repair.
2. Set default Program for OneNote 2016: Control Panel > Default Programs > Set your default Programs, in Settings page, select Default Apps > Set defaults by app. Choose OneNote 2016, click Manage:
3. Set all onenote file type and protocol to use OneNote 2016.
4. Save the setting, open OneNote 2016 (not OneNote) and Outlook 2016. Create a new notebook or open one existing notebook in OneNote 2016.
5. In Outlook 2016, check with the Send to OneNote feature.

Winnie Liang

All these steps were already done. And repeated now.
No result still the same issue. Thoug I have to say within the Set defaults by App there is no OneNote at all.
It is however in the native Default Programs within the Config Panel
I am running Windows 8.1

Hi,
Please open OneNote 2016, go to File > Account > About OneNote, collect the detailed OneNote 2016 version.
Additionally, please open a document in Word 2016, click File > Print, under Printer, select Send to OneNote 2016. Click Print, check if any error is prompted for OneNote 2016.
If the issue only happens to Outlook client, I suggest we can start Outlook in safe mode: Press Win+R to open Run, type Outlook /safe, press Enter. Then check if the Send to OneNote issue can be fixed in safe mode.
Regards,
Winnie Liang

Microsoft OneNote 2016 MSO (16.0.8201.2200) 32 bit
As for testing printing to OneNote. This does nothing at all. Just nothing happens.

Hi,
Do you mean your Outlook 2016 version is Outlook 2016 MSO (16.0.8528.2126) while using OneNote 2016 MSO (16.0.8201.2200)?
If the issue only happen to one user, I suggest we can try to uninstall Office 365 ProPlus, then reinstall the latest one on this computer to check if the issue can be fixed:

It's for all windows 10 systems in multiple enviornments
I'm having this issue so do collegues. so does our customer
To be honest I'm expecting this is a result of a bug within office or windows. I expect it doesn't setup oneone 365 propperly in Windows 10

Thanks for update the details. I suggest you can reinstall Office on one affected machine to keep Outlook and OneNote to the same build version to check if the issue can be fixed.
For OneNote version 16.0.8201.2200, it is the current latest version 1705 of Deferred Update Channel while the Outlook version 16.0.8528.2126 is Office version 1709. Please try to use them in the same version number on your side.
