Outlook 2013 - Inbox not showing count of unread emails

Question

Monday, February 9, 2015 9:24 PM

Ever since moving to Outlook 2013, some of our users are experiencing issues where their inbox does not show the count of unread emails. These user's are working in cached exchange mode. Taking them out of cached exchange mode, deleting OST file and then putting back in cached exchange mode usually resolves the issue. However, this is only temporary and the problem comes back. We are running Exchange 2010.

Any suggestions on how to resolve this issue for good?

Thanks.

Hi,

Please right click on one folder, and select Properties, and make sure the "Show number of unread items" option is selected. If it is already selected, change it to "Show total number of items", click OK. Then, change it the "Show number of unread items" again to check result.

Please check if this issues appears in OWA.

If possible, please switch to online mode temporarily and check result.

Hi,

OWA works fine, it seems that the issue is related to Outlook side.

Please open Outlook in safe mode to check result.

And based on your description, only some of users have this problem. Please change to a different coomputer to check if this issue persists.

Hi

As per the information and details provided by you, to solve the problem of Outlook 2013, please follow these steps: -

I was also having the same problem. At the top of the Inbox, I clicked “Unread” (which is new to Outlook 2013, and different than the Unread, Mail search folder). It showed a message, something like, “there are more items on the server”, and gave me a link to view the items. When I clicked the link, no items appeared, but my unread mail indicator on my Inbox went away.

I hope this information will be helpful for you.

Thanks and regards

It looks like this is something to do with Outlook 2013 client. The only way to resolve at this point is too delete the .ost and have outlook rebuild. We have a GPO to force clients in cached exchange mode so online mode is not an option. OWA appears fine.

Thanks for your information.

Same issue.  Unread emails in inbox do not show in the count.  When Outlook 2013 starts they show briefly in the folder pane then disappear.

Right click/Properties on Inbox folder shows no counts whether unread or total is selected

Clicking Unread at the top does not yield any additional messages on server

Going into OWA shows correct unread count, but as suggested by some does not fix Outlook 2013

Running outlook.exe /cleanviews as suggested by some does not work

Disabling cached exchange mode shows the correct number of unread emails

Running scanpst.exe on the .ost file is a brief fix (one day)

I also use the Exchange account on my iOS iPhone 5S.  It shows the correct unread account.

Starting in safe mode shows the correct number of unread emails

I disabled ALL the Add-Ins, restarted and the Inbox (and other folders) started showing correct unread count.  I turned each Add-In back on until I found the one that erased the unread count.  I keep that one disabled since it got installed by another program and I don't need it.  This is a repeatable fix, but only time will tell if it comes back.

I had the same issue. I tried multiple things to no avail (including checking folder properties, launching in clean view, etc.). I had Outlook pinned to my toolbar. I shut outlook down, unpinned my shortcut, launched from one on the desktop. Issue resolved.
