Configure Windows Server Essentials stuck at 17%

Question

Thursday, February 11, 2016 9:43 PM

I have tried re-starting the install a couple of times but each time it gets to 17% on Updating and preparing your server and just sits there. The system is responsive but the Preparing your server never gets past 17%. I let it sit overnight and in the morning it was still at the same spot. Any ideas on how I can get past this?

I was able to get Server 2016 TP completed last night. At 17% the computer restarts so I started checking things and found not all the services set to start automatically were running. After setting the services to run the configuration completed.

Same issue, i checked my services and like 6 that were set to auto were not running. starting them made the process continue

What services did you turn on?

You are correct.  Opened services, sorted by how they are setup to run and about 6 auto-start not running.  Started those 6 and update continued.

Thanks for the solution.

To be more specific the WseMgmtSvc service (Configure Windows Server Essentials) need to be started.

Hey Guys. I was having the same problem, thanks to Versx for the fix. I wrote up a quick step by step in case you or someone you know needs one. I'll post it direct here, but the version on my website has pictures too. Cheers

If you're having this problem follow these steps:

Go to Start -> All Apps ->Windows Administrative Tools -> Services

Once Services is open, look for Windows Server Essentials Management Service. Right click on it and select run.

thanks for sharing the fix..  it's going now.

I found the solution was to start services that had failed to automatically start.

You will need to start the Microsoft Server Essentials Manager Service.

Yeah this worked for me.

I was having the same issue. Went through and started various services that were automatic, but not running. Started moving again.

Same here. What a nasty bug. Somebody at Microsoft addressing this?

Same problem for me. Install fine the first time. Used the same media on the same hardware with a different hard drive and stuck at 17% and 39%. When it does finish the dashboard is un-usable with errors preventing it from opening, even in safe mode.

2016 Essentials is so buggy that I am not even that into it anymore. When it did work I had errors with Hyper-V backups and was told to go bare metal to see if the problem persists. Now I can't even install the OS to where it works properly. Hyper-V backup is the least of my worries now.

I will spend a few more hours on this then if it isn't working I will put my 2012r2 drives back into the hardware. I most likely will go 3rd party solution next time. I don't have the hours to dedicate to this. I am losing money by not working on what I should working on. Instead I have spend the better part of two days finding bugs in software.

First time with setting up a server for a client (or anyone) and quite frustrated at the failed attempts to install. Tried completely stripping the drive, removing partitions, etc., before the last attempt only to get to the fabled 17% and stop. Soooooo glad I came across your advice not only to solve the problem--which it did--but also to know I wasn't alone with this issue. Thank you, thank you, thank you.

I am puzzled at why the installation would not start or even set to start these services automatically. There was nothing on the drive from a previous life that might have interfered with a freshly installed service/script/program.

Stopped again at 39%, but at least I knew what to look for this time.

Friday, July 28, 2017 8:07 PM

Thank you, this thread saved my new server install of WSE 2016.
This is the second time I've had issues with 2016 as well as a language pack issue, really starting to think its not ready for prime time. Maybe will go with 2012R2 for the next customer.

Thank You so much. Been stuck at 17% for 6 hours. Restarting computer didn't help until reading this post. Thanks!

Genius! I had the same problem and was about ready to do a clean install! Thanks Bob!

Tuesday, August 21, 2018 1:59 PM

This worked for me! The services that I had to start were all Windows Server Essentials services.

Friday, September 7, 2018 5:52 AM

This worked for me stopping at 17% Right Click Windows Server Essentials Management Service ( in as mentioned in Services )  run, stopping again at 39% Right click run again, error at 95% Try again then finally sorted

Wednesday, December 5, 2018 8:04 PM

It Works for me. Thanks !!!!
