Question
Tuesday, July 8, 2014 2:03 PM
I am running two Windows 2008 R2 servers (hosting DFS) within a VMware 4.1 environment. From the VM side of the house additional space was allocated. My question is: Can I simply expand my volume using the Disk Management's GUI to extend the drive (of course without interruption of DFS)? I have done this many times, but never when DFS is running on the volume. Thanks.

In Windows 2008 R2, as long as disk management can see the additional (unallocated) space, extending the drive while DFS is running has no impact on DFS. I was able to extend the drive and not take any resources offline.

Hi,
You mentioned that you cannot extend the volume when DFS is running on the volume. What error message displayed when you extend the volume? Is there any error message in the Event Log?
Please refer to the thread below to check if it helps:

No, I have not extended the volume. I just want to know if I can extend without taking DFS offline. I did some searching but did not find anything. Thanks for the reply.

OK! Honestly, I have ever tried to extend my computer partition space in Disk Management: shrink one partition with free space, right click the destination partition and choose “Extend” to add the free space there.
But, if the Disk Manage tool cannot extend your volume, you also can try other ways. When trying to find solution of my partition extending, I have found there are also some partition resizing tools that could help extend a volume.
So, you can also take chances.
Here is an article that can give you detailed information of partition extending:

I hope my words can give you some clues.
Please tell us your result timely.
