Rules in Error - "Cannot reply to message" error when you use Run Rules Now

Question

Thursday, March 17, 2016 4:50 PM

I created an auto reply rule from outlook. Never been able to get the auto reply email. when i run the rule manually, get an error box saying Rules in Error - "Cannot reply to message".

Exactly described in https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/kb/2028839 .

Except that i am using Exchange 2016 and Outlook 2013. Any idea or help would be great.

For the record, the server reply rule did not work for external senders, and causes the "Cannot reply message" error. However, it worked for internal senders.

And the solution is
"set-remotedomain -Identity * -AutoReplyEnabled $true"

Did you try the template like the article suggested? This could just be a case where the KB wasn't updated for newer versions of Outlook.

No. that suggested solution is not what i needed. I have mailboxes that hardly connect by outlook. I need the rule to be executed from Exchange server.

Hi,

After creating this inbox rule, have you tried to send a message to test this rule?

I create the same inbox rule as yours, receive the same error, but when I click 'Run Now' button second time, I don't receive the error. And when I send a message, this inbox rule works fine.

Best Regards.

hi Lynn,

Yes I did test with sending email to trigger the rule first. Didn't get any reply.

However, with more testing, i found that when the sender was an internal user, the inbox reply rule works fine. If the sender was an external email, it didn't work.

I too, found out clicking "Run Now" button send time, the error didn't show.

On the other hand, I paid a professional support incident for this case. The MS engineer first threw me around by says my case needed an Advisory Service. When I explicitly point out I experience an ERROR with numeric channels, even I pointed him to an outdated KB (https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/kb/2028839) describing the same case in older version of outlook/exchange, he just replied me saying "i have tested from my side with same result, yes it doesn't work, it's in the kb, sorry i can't help you"( wording is a bit different of course) and wanted to shut me down. Is this how MS normally handle that ??
