Windows 10 File Explorer not showing Linux devices

Question

Tuesday, April 2, 2019 11:29 AM

I expect to be able to see all network computers in the top section of Windows Network Explorer.

This is sometimes the case, but mostly no Linux devices are shown.  This means Linux NAS cannot be seen.

UPnP Servers for the devices DO show OK as Media devices, but the device itself and access to shares does not show up.

It IS possible to access all the Linux devices by IP address or friendly name.

This is very annoying and is inconsistent.

There seems to be considerable history on this - I have worked through all the alleged fixes - but so far it seems unpredictable whether Network Explorer displays Linux devices or not.

What is going on?

And more important - how to fix it please.

Alan

I'm having the same issue with Windows 10 File Explorer and accessing Linux computers via the network. Most of the time I have no problem. Just like Alan's said in his first post, accessing the Linux computers via File Explorer is not consistent.

Also, when File Explorer fails to see the Linux computers, I can access them using the Windows 10 console command line, e.g., this command works fine:   c:/>dir \linuxdev\path\to\file

In order to get File Explorer to recognize the Linux computers on the Network, I have been rebooting the Linux devices and then File Explorer finds them after I do a "Refresh".

As for the services HK.Leon listed, all of them are enabled and running on my Windows 10 computer except for "Network Connections" which is set to "Startup Type: Manual" but "Status" is "blank" rather than "Running".

My question is: Should I change the Startup Type for the Network Connections service from Manual to something else?

I am currently using Windows 10 v1909 [Version 10.0.18363.535] with updates through 2019-12. However, this same intermittent problem also occurred with previous Windows 10 versions 1809 and 1903.

Thanks, Mike
