user created schedule tasks disappearing

Question

Wednesday, March 14, 2018 11:47 PM

A while back I changed the startup setting of a service to manual and then created and imported into all the PCs on my home network a scheduled task to start that service 1 hour after the start/reboot of any of my 4 PCs (the service is a manufacture added service and isn't necessary for proper operation to the PC and was drastically affecting startup time/functionality of the PCs). Recently the scheduled task just magically disappeared from the task scheduler in all those PCs (I had saved the xml file and was able to re-import the task).

Why did this happen and what can I do to prevent it from happening again?

Windows 10 Home (64) ver 1709 build 16299.309

Hi,

In the Task Scheduler if the line "Task Scheduler (Local)" is selected, you won't see your custom tasks. Select "Task Scheduler Library" and you will see your custom tasks.

Also disable the security software to check if the task has been blocked.

Hope it will be helpful to you

The task was gone on all PCs from the Task Scheduler Library (also I didn't mention it, but on one PC I had an additional custom task starting a program I always use on that PC and it disappeared too, unfortunately I never exported a copy so eventually I'll have to manually create it again). I'm pretty sure this happened during a recent Windows update. What I don't understand is why tasks created by various programs didn't disappear too (unless they were deleted and the programs somehow automatically recreated them).

I see some programs create folders that their scheduled tasks are stored in. Do I need to create a folder for my custom tasks and move/keep them in it?

Hi,

Windows Update will not remove the tasks automatically.

First, please show all hidden tasks in Task scheduler.

Also open a command line window and type schtasks to list existing tasks, see if we can find your task and remember the folder and the taskname.

You can also check whether a file for your task exists in:

C:\Windows\System32\Tasks
