Microsoft Edge - 3rd Party Plugin (Extension) - GPO to Enable

Question

Wednesday, September 19, 2018 5:59 PM

Hi, we are trialling deploying a 3rd party extension, I have configured 2 x GPOs to enable this plugin on both Chrome and IE11, however I cannot seem to find an option within Group Policy under Computer Configuration > Policies > Administrative Templates > Windows Components > Microsoft Edge that allows me to enable specific plugins for Edge.

The only option I can see is Allow Extensions, but this is just whether or not we want to Enable or Disable users from being able to install Extensions, and this is currently set to Not Configured (which otherwise just enables it anyway).

IE11 and Chrome are both working fine, plugin is enabled and is working as it should be as per the GPOs.

We have had to specify the CLSID of the plugin under Computer Configuration > Policies > Administrative Templates > Windows Components > Internet Explorer > Security Features > Add-on Management > Add-on List for IE11 to work (and a similar entry for Chrome) but can anyone advise on how we can do this for Edge?

I have checked the Windows Store and I can see our plugin is available on there. Although the plugin is installed on my test machine via the deployment method, it still shows as I am able to "Get" and install it via the Store for Edge. I have installed it via the Store and it works fine, no conflict issues with the plugin I deployed, now all 3 browsers are working with the PlugIn.

Is there anyway I can install this plugin via a GPO for Edge, or has anyone came across a way I can enable the 3rd party plugin via GPO? Even via a regkey? The only regkeys I can find online relate to Enabling or Disabling extensions in general.

Reason I need to do this is that we cant have the users doing it manually.

I am using the latest Windows 10 ADMX files for 1803 and the users are not admins on their machines.

Hi,

Thanks for your reply.

Currently, Microsoft Edge do not support silent installation of extensions. All extensions for Microsoft Edge must be deployed from the Microsoft Store. The installation must be initiated and completed by the user, using only the user experience provided by Microsoft Edge and the Microsoft Store

https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/legal/windows/agreements/microsoft-browser-extension-policy

But we have another option, if you deployed SCCM in your environment.

Deploy an Application from Windows Store for Business via System Center Configuration Manager

Hope above information can help you.

Hi,

Thanks for your post in our forum.

As  your description, I know that you want to add a plugin to the Edge.

According to my understanding, there is no such group policy or registry to deploy this on multiple computers.

Perhaps you can try to use some scripts to finish it.

And, you can click on the follow link to open a new case on the script forum.

Thanks Otto, I did believe that was the reason but wanted to ask incase I missed something.

From doing more reading online I believe in order to mass deploy an Extension to Edge then I would need to use Intune or SCCM to deploy from Windows Store for Business.
