Cannot Create Distribution Group

Question

Thursday, September 29, 2016 3:57 PM | 1 vote

I go to the Exchange admin center and whenever I try to add a distribution group under add,

it automatically comes up to the window that is for Office 365 Group and not a Distribution Group. Not sure why this bug has occurred.

I have a video showing what is happening but it won't let me include them.

Hi A.Haines,

You could not have the permission to include the video in this forum.

Could you please make some screenshots for the UI of the options?

Do you perform these options on Exchange server online?

Hope the following article is helpful for you:

I have the same problem when trying to create a new distribution list in Exchange Online Admin Center. It automatically shows Office 365 Group. I have experienced this issue in few different Tennants today.

I had a few more questions to ask to help narrow this down:

Thanks,

I'm having the same issue. Extremely frustrating.

I was able to create one via powershell, but it's not acceptable that this functionality is removed from the Cloud EAC.

Same here. Extremely frustrating. Office 365 groups are great, but bot as a replacement for plain distribution groups. This should be fixed ASAP.

Jason, why do you mark your reply as the answer when it obviously isn't an answer to the problem? This is unsolved.

FYI I have the same issue.

This is Office 365 though - Exchange Online. I'm not sure if it's posted in the wrong forums.

Adding 'Distribution Group' is not possible through EAC. It does work through Office Admin Centre though, and then shows up in EAC.

Perhaps you can try it yourself?

Sorry to repeat myself, but after such a long time no response on such a serious bug, is acceptable in itself. But also I want to take this opportunity to name one more reason why Office 365 groups are NOT an alternative for old fashioned Distribution Groups: you cannot add Contacts, only other Office 365 subscribers. This is unacceptable since we have project teams with external consultants in them.

Of course there is a workaround and that is to use Powershell, but that shouldn't be necessary for such a trivial task. So please MS, respond and fix.

To anyone who is looking for a solution to this issue, here's the answer:

Indeed, the issue is when creating a distribution group within the Exchange Admin. To get around this, use the Office 365 Admin (Home -> Groups -> Add a Group -> Distribution List. After creating, "Edit Exchange settings". You will see that the created group is indeed a Distribution List, not an Office 365 group. Thus, I can create an alias and more.

Note: I had the same issue today and managed to get this working via this method.

Best regards

Julian

Thanks for the fix, Julian.

As of May 2017, the issue is still not fixed.

As of June 2017 it has actually gotten worse.

There now is a wizard that helps you "Migrate" your Distribution Groups to Office 365 Groups. I have tested what happens if you try this and this with a Distribution Group with one external Contact item as member: Nothing. The conversion will start but the list of "Upgraded DL's" will stay empty no matter how often you refresh. If you close it, you'll find your Group where is was before. Still eligible for upgrade.

If I were responsible, I'd feel ashamed.
