Preview .XLSX file extension with uppercase

Question

Tuesday, February 20, 2018 8:17 AM

I am not able to preview .XLSX file if the extension is all in Uppercase. The preview pane works fine for all office file types including excel files. This .XLXS file type is the only exception.

Is there any update that addresses this issue or is there any workaround?

I have tried a few workarounds that are mentioned in this thread:  https://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/office/en-US/e1e41fc9-a0be-49f3-b3d8-5174cc501ee0/excel-2010-preview-handler-broken-if-file-extension-is-uppercase?forum=excel. Unfortunately, they did not help.

I have also checked the Registry on the guid of the handler. It is {00020827 0000 0000 c000 000000000046}.

Hi kwa56,

Thank you for your explanation.

I could reproduce your issue in my environment (see the below). When one or more than one capital letter is in file extension (e.g. xlsX, xLSx), File Explorer doesn't show preview and says "This file can't be previews".

I suppose the issue is caused from Excel (instead of Windows), because Windows without Excel cannot show any previews for Excel documents.
I recommend to send a feedback to Excel User Voice.

[environment for test]
-- All Excel files are in NAS (shared folder)
  -- Windows:

      8.1 Pro 64-bit, Excel 2013 32-bit
      7 Home 64-bit, Excel 2010 32-bit

Hi,

I'm not sure if I can understand correctly your question. So, let me confirm.
(1) the meaning of "preview":
Does it mean Print Preview that is shown by [File] > [Print]?
(2) version and architecture:
Please provide version (2016, 2013, etc.) and architecture (32-bit, 64-bit) number of your Excel

Hi,

It is not from the print preview. The issue I encountered is previewing the file from Windows explore preview pane. (In File Explorer, go to View > and select Preview Pane. )

I have Excel 2016 MSO (16.0.8431.2110) 32 bit on my machine.

I also see the issue on another machine with Excel 2013 (15.0.4675.1000) 64 bit.

Thanks,

kwa
