Server DNS record updating to wrong IP address

Question

Saturday, October 8, 2016 12:19 AM

Out of the blue we started losing connectivity to our SQL server from clients.  The server was accessible by pinging the ip address however the DNS name started resolving to something different.  When you look in the DNS record on the DNS server the record had changed for the server.  However the IP address on the server had not changed.  We can reset the record in DNS for the server or reboot and reregisted the IP address from the server and eveything will work fine for a half hour a or so and then change again.  The address it changes to can be different IP addresses although usually it has been one or another.

We have reset the tcp stack on the server,  installed a different network card but it keeps happening.

Any idea what to look for?

Hi 2012,

>> How do I configure scavenging time

Please right-click DNS server, click Set Aging/Scavenging for All zones.

Please check if you have enabled Scavenging.

On DHCP server, please right-click IPv4, and then click properties, select DNS tab.

And then click Name Protection configure, you could enable name protection.

You could reference link below to understand it:

Did you mean if DNS server had enabled scavenging and then DHCP server will not update DNS server?

If yes, it would not.

You could reference link below to understand scavenging:

***UPDATE***

When I access in the registry the HKLM\System\CurrentControlSet001\services\tcpip\parameters\interfaces\

There are a few GUID and in each of these there are DHCP ip addresses along with the static address that is supposed to be the permanent DNS address.  For some reason DHCP is being used by the adapters and updating our DNS server periodically.

How do I stop dhcp client when it is not programmed at all on the adapters in the Netowrk Connections GUI interface?

Hi 2012,

Did you mean that DNS record of server had changed?

Have you configured DHCP server registered record to DNS server?

Have you configured scavenging time to clear stale record?

Please reference the article below to configure scavenging time and DHCP lease time:

Yes, mean DNS record of server

Yes DHCP server is registering records to DNS

How do I configure scavenging time?  Would this remove the items from DHCP so they won;t keep trying to update DNS after they are no t in use?
