Question

Hello everyone,
I have recently purchased a laptop with windows 10 preinstalled on it. After copying files and folders from my old laptop and working on one of the files, I found an issue with date modified information (seems to be observed by others too). The file date modified is updated properly but the sub-folders and higher level parent folders still show the old date without updating this information. It basically takes out the purpose of sorting using date modified at folder level if this information is incorrect. I have contacted Microsoft support 4 times already with steps ranging from sfcscan to reinstalling windows 10 (upgrade PC with windows 10) and nothing worked. And each time they suggest me to buy their paid support which is not what I would expect from an issue with a new laptop. Can anyone who had similar issue and found a solution help me with this? I never had such problems with Windows 7 but I am not liking Windows 10 so far.

Hi,
From your description, would you like to try the following steps:
1. Right-click the Date button field on top where the wrong date is showing. (not the file but the header for that column)
2. Choose Date modified, and then right-click again and uncheck Date created.
Alternatively you can reset all folders to default:
1. Click View tab in the File Explorer and click Options.
2. Then click Reset Folders on View tab.
Hope these are helpful.

Hi,
I tried the options you have mentioned and it did not make any impact. The date modified still has the same issue with no getting updated appropriately. I just want to confirm whether this issue is specific to the windows on my laptop or common to windows 10 OS.

Hi,
I tested on my computers without problems. So it’s not common to Windows 10 os.
I suggest you perform a clean install by the following link:

Hope these are helpful.

I am experiencing exactly this issue, also on a brand new laptop. Ran all Win 10 updates, and on the latest build, issue persists. I would love to see a "resolution" beyond a fresh wipe and install. The issue is definitely prevalent beyond just a system or two.

The expected behaviour is that the Last Modified date of a parent folder matches the latest time of a child element.
FAT never did this. NTFS does do it, but not immediately. The file-system engineers considered immediate updating too expensive.
Your Windows 7 would not have been any different.
There are some utilities to help ( Folder update or some such ). But either you accept it or use an OS with a better filesystem ...
