Why don't you try everything sequentially using web platform installer.

http://www.microsoft.com/web/downloads/platform.aspx

or the sequence is

install .net 3.5

install sql server express advanced with management studio.

you get all you want

Hi.

Install sql server first and then VS. Actually there is no sequence. But this minimize the unexpectables.

Here is what I will do:

  1. After installing Windows 7, do a Windows update.  That will take care all the framework update.  I think this will take care of .net  3.5
  2. Next is to install Visual Studio 2005 or 2008.
  3. SQL server.
  4. I will run a Windows update again just to make sure all patches are there.

As someone has pointed out already, using the web platform installer is much easier.  Well, if you have purchased Visual Studio and SQL server, of course, you want the full product.  You don't want to thru those money away.  But if you just in the planning stage (that means you have not purchased the products), you should stick to the web installer.

Note: Web platform installer takes a bit of time to download and install.  Give an hour or so.

If you intend to install to a non-default location, then it is better to install Visual Studio first as both use the Visual Studio outer shell.
